A Newport News man will spend a year in jail for having consensual sex with a minor.

William Travis Green received the one-year term during formal sentencing held Monday afternoon in New Kent Circuit Court.

Green was originally charged two counts of sodomy with kidnapping and two charges of sexual penetration with an object during his original indictments. During a March 2026 trial, the two sodomy charges were reduced to misdemeanor having consensual sex with a minor after evidence could not prove the felony offenses. The two charges of sexual penetration with an object were dropped.

During the March trial, Green entered guilty pleas to the two misdemeanors. A summary of evidence presented during the trial indicated that Jan. 2022, Green began having interactions with an underage child living in New Kent County. Eventually, Green and the victim had intercourse during that time period. Authorities learned of the offense during an investigation, with Green developing as the prime suspect. When Green was confronted with the allegation, he confessed to the offenses.

In March, Green was placed on the First Offender Charge as an evaluation was conducted. However, Monday afternoon’s trial resulted in the termination of the First Offender Status, leading to formal sentencing.

Green received a 12-month sentence with no time suspended on the first charge of consensual sex with a minor. All 12 months on the second offense were suspended.
