Phyllis E. Buchanan

Phyllis E. Buchanan, born Feb. 11, 1933, passed away on Nov. 27, 2023.

Phyllis had to be busy all the time. She volunteered with many groups, her church, Providence United Methodist Church, served on the Ladies Auxiliary for the fire department, LaSeratoma, at the elementary school as a substitute nurse or working with special needs children in reading, as an officer with the Virginia Learning Disabled program, at the county fair by either judging, helping with set-up, or entering one of her handmade quilts, with the girl scouts, as an officer in Eastern Star of Roanoke, and her most favorite job was dispatching at Providence Forge Volunteer Rescue Squad. She said her only regret was she could not work another year to have 20 years of service as she had to stop at 19 years.

Phyllis loved being busy so when she would watch television, she was either knitting, crocheting, or cross-stitching. She said she could not sit still if her hands were not busy.

Phyllis is preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Lacy R. Buchanan; and their son, Floyd Joseph.

She is survived by her two daughts, Patty Lee and Siva Jewel; a son, Michael Ray; nine grandchildren, of which two she raised, Christa and Cameron; and seven great-grandchildren. Along with her husband, Phyllis had numerous foster children come through their home over many years.

A memorial service was held on Monday, Dec. 4, 2023, 1 p.m. at Providence United Methodist Church, 4001 New Kent Highway, Quinton, Virginia, 23141. Online tributes can be posted at www.vincentfh.com.
