William Lathan Burnett

William Lathan ‘Bill’ Burnett passed peacefully from this life on May 30, 2013.

Born in 1925 in Meadows of Dan, Va., he was a long time resident of the peninsula. This last year of his life he made his home with his daughter and son-in-law, Lynne and Dennis, in New Kent.

An avid fisherman and hunter, he received an honor as the longest member of the Toano Hunt Club. Also an excellent cook and gardener, he gave away almost all of what he grew, and he was revered for his mashed potatoes and grilled BBQ chicken. His greatest love was his family.

He is survived by eight children; Maurine Frank, Lynne Jenkins and her husband, Dennis, Mike Burnett and his wife, Susie, Ronald Burnett, Regina Bowery and her husband Michael, Loretta Watson and her husband, Donnie, Eula Faye Parks and her husband, Gary, and Aldea Young and her husband, Jim, as well as thirteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.

Bill was a good man, always others first and ready to lend a hand whenever needed. So please, save your flowers. Instead, do a kindness or good deed, specifically in his name in the upcoming days.

A memorial service was held at Peninsula Funeral Home, Newport News, on Sunday, June 2. His remains will rest in the Burnett Family Cemetery in Meadows of Dan.
