New Kent’s Lady Trojans captures Bay Rivers District title with 7-0 win
Remaining positive and figuring out solutions to problems usually factors into everyday life. That motto applied to New Kent’s Lady Trojans in the May 18 Bay Rivers District Championship contest against the York Lady Falcons.
With the offense clicking at the right time, New Kent defeated York 7-0, clinching the title for a third consecutive season.
It would take a while for the Lady Trojan offense to get going. In the bottom of the fourth, Hannah Tolber and Kennedy Ziglar crossed home plate to provide the hosts a 2-0 lead.
The bottom of the sixth inning is when the flourish of runs came in for the hosts. Abbie Kegley’s double brought home Ziglar. Leah Rounds followed with a sacrifice fly, allowing Hannah Perkins to trot across home plate. After Cassidy Branch reached second base, a bunt by Alline Alexander drove her home, upping the advantage to 5-0 for the hosts. That lead increased as a two-run double by Morgan Berg provided a huge gap for the Lady Trojans, one that York could not overcome.
After the contest, New Kent Lady Trojans Head Coach Maria Bates was thrilled by the team’s rejuvenation.
“The postseason in my mind is a different season,” she commented. “We use the regular season to fine tune everything and in May into June, everything matters especially with the tradition we are building here.
“We have cleaned up the mental approach to the game,” Bates added. “We are playing great defense and we are trusting each other.”
New Kent’s Lady Trojans receives a first-round bye in the regional tournament and are scheduled to host on Friday, May 26.
