New Kent’s boys’ soccer team’s season hasn’t been the pleasant of experiences. But a heart-filled effort against the Group 4A state runners-up from last year seemed to brighten up the spirits for the host.

New Kent fell 3-0 to the visiting Smithfield Packers in the May 1 Bay Rivers District match-up.

The Trojans’ defense was more like a Trojans’ Wall in the first half. Despite several attempts and being attacked by Smithfield shots, New Kent held their own thanks to key disruptions and goaltending from Lucas Bassetti.

But sometimes walls have cracks in them, and Smithfield’s Jackson Young found one of them. A great shot to the corner of the net provided the visitors with a 1-0 advantage.

New Kent’s best scoring attempt came at the 10:50 mark in the first half. A breakaway attempt was thwarted by Smithfield. Two minutes later, Fitz Holloway punched in another goal for the Packers, providing them a 2-0 lead that would stand until the halftime intermission.

The Trojans’ defense continued to stand firm, only surrendering one more goal after the break. Still, the offense sputtered for New Kent, as they went scoreless in the contest and have dropped 11 consecutive contests.

New Kent Head Coach Derek Yates, however, was pleased with the heart and dedication that he has been searching for all year from his group.

“We held a great team midway through the first half without a point,” the head coach commented. “Our attitude and effort after last week have greatly improved. I was impressed with them, and we fought until the end and played a great soccer match.”

New Kent’s record stands at 1-11 on the season.
