Lanexa postmaster retires after 23 years in New Kent

By Community Member | May 7, 2008 10:49 am

Bryan Perkinson spent his last day on Friday behind the customer service counter at Lanexa Post Office. Thus ended a 35-year career with the U.S. Postal Service, the last 23 as Lanexa’s postmaster. “It’s going to be a little different not seeing everyone like I usually do,” he said while sitting in his office the day before reflecting on his work in the New Kent County community. “I’ve been here since 1985. It’s been a long time, but it doesn’t seem like it,” he added. “When you stay in the same place, you get to know everyone, see families grow…

By Alan Chamberlain | May 7, 2008 10:45 am

Sheriff’s personnel in New Kent are searching for the suspect who attempted to pull off an unusual armed robbery at a county business, but fled the scene before being handed cash. The suspect, described as a white male in his early twenties, 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-10 in height with blond hair and wear a red hooded jacket and khaki cargo pants, entered the Movie Gallery store at 2605 New Kent Highway in Quinton around 4:30 p.m. on April 30. The two clerks on duty watched as the man walked around the store and then left. Moments later, he returned and brandished…

State-of-the-art technology coming in under budget

By Community Member | May 7, 2008 10:43 am

New Kent School Board members are praising efforts by administrators who negotiated lower than anticipated costs for furniture and technology packages bound for the county’s new high school. Best of all, when the building opens in September classrooms inside the $50 million structure will feature “high-end” technology as opposed to the more “affordable” packages school officials had expected to purchase. “There’s no question in my mind we’ll be presenting you in August with a 21st century, pretty close to top of the line high school,” associate superintendent Rick Richardson told board members during their Monday night meeting. Richardson, who along…

NK can get by with 73-cent tax rate, administrator says

By Alan Chamberlain | May 7, 2008 10:41 am

New Kent Board of Supervisors members could be looking at lowering the county’s proposed real estate tax rate for next year to 73 cents. But there is some discussion in the works about providing additional money support for county schools. During an April 14 budget work session, supervisors decided to advertise for public hearing a 75 cents per $100 of assessed value real estate tax rate for the 2008-09 fiscal year that begins July 1. But just two weeks later at another work session on April 29, board members learned the county could get by with 73 cents. “Right now,…

Sex offenses dropped, but replaced by firearm counts

By Alan Chamberlain | May 7, 2008 10:39 am

Fifteen sex offense counts involving two young girls and lodged against a Charles City County man have been dropped. But Forrest Everett “Skeeter” Evans now faces 10 firearm charges that, if convicted, could place him behind bars for the rest of his life. A motion filed by Charles City Commonwealth’s Attorney Rob Tyler to drop the sex charges — 10 counts of aggravated sexual battery and five counts of forcible sodomy — was granted yesterday (Tuesday) by county circuit court Judge Thomas B. Hoover. Evans, 74, of 5901 Courthouse Road, Providence Forge, had been indicted last November by a grand…

Seven CC teaching jobs face elimination in budget crunch

By Alan Chamberlain | May 7, 2008 10:28 am

Charles City school officials are faced with eliminating seven teaching positions and four other jobs to balance its $13 million budget for the next school year. And county School Board members are far from happy about the prospect. Board members learned of the schools’ predicament during a work session last Thursday night. School Superintendent Janet Crawley presented the board with three options for trimming personnel. All three, however, involve seven teaching posts — three at the elementary school and two at both the middle and high schools — along with one central office administrator, the schools’ food service director, an…

CC church holds celebration

By Community Member | May 7, 2008 9:56 am

Rain was in the forecast. They were even calling for thunderstorms with high winds and hail. This did not deter the members of Little Elam Baptist Church from preparing for the first part of their Family and Friends Day celebration on April 12. Program director LaWanda Christian could be heard saying, “I don’t mean any harm or disrespect, but please don’t anyone come to me with another weather forecast. I have faith that it is not going to rain.” Her faith along with the faith of the other members, family and those friends who braved the impending weather was enough…

New Kent 5 Lafayette 0 (softball)

By Alan Chamberlain | May 7, 2008 9:54 am

Becca Mills tossed a two-hitter and New Kent’s offense gradually pulled away as the host Lady Trojans blanked Lafayette’s visiting Rams 5-0. The hosts took the lead for good in the third inning on the way to an April 23 outcome that upped New Kent’s Bay Rivers District softball record to 9-3. “We left too many runners on base [nine], but we had good at-bats,” said Lady Trojan coach Betsey Lane. “We were able to work the count and work pitches,” she said. “We didn’t swing at any bad pitches, and overall, it was a good hitting day for us.”…

Smithfield tops NK in OT

By Alan Chamberlain | May 7, 2008 9:53 am

Smithfield’s Packers punched in the deciding goal with less than a minute remaining in the second overtime period to hand New Kent’s host Trojans a 2-1 setback last Wednesday in Bay Rivers District soccer. The outcome once again denied the Trojans their first win of the season as they fell to 0-4-1 in the district and 0-7-2 overall. “It was a good battle and we had our chances, but we just couldn’t finish,” Trojan coach Craig Aliff said. New Kent had little success against the Packer defense for much of regulation, and it appeared an early first half Smithfield goal…
