By Alan Chamberlain | May 7, 2008 11:20 am

Becca Mills tossed a two-hitter and New Kent’s offense gradually pulled away as the host Lady Trojans blanked Lafayette’s visiting Rams 5-0. The hosts took the lead for good in the third inning on the way to an April 23 outcome that upped New Kent’s Bay Rivers District softball record to 9-3. “We left too many runners on base [nine], but we had good at-bats,” said Lady Trojan coach Betsey Lane. “We were able to work the count and work pitches,” she said. “We didn’t swing at any bad pitches, and overall, it was a good hitting day for us.”…

Smithfield tops NK in OT

By Alan Chamberlain | May 7, 2008 11:16 am

Smithfield’s Packers punched in the deciding goal with less than a minute remaining in the second overtime period to hand New Kent’s host Trojans a 2-1 setback last Wednesday in Bay Rivers District soccer. The outcome once again denied the Trojans their first win of the season as they fell to 0-4-1 in the district and 0-7-2 overall. “It was a good battle and we had our chances, but we just couldn’t finish,” Trojan coach Craig Aliff said. New Kent had little success against the Packer defense for much of regulation, and it appeared an early first half Smithfield goal…

Six-run burst lifts NK, 7-3

By Alan Chamberlain | May 7, 2008 11:10 am

A six-run burst in the fifth inning broke a 1-1 deadlock, propelling New Kent’s Lady Trojans past Poquoson’s visiting Islanders 7-3 in a crucial Bay Rivers’ District softball encounter last Wednesday. The victory not only avenged a 3-0, no-hit shutout last month at the hands of the Islanders, but also maintained at least a half-game lead in the district standings for the first place Lady Trojans. The outcome marked New Kent’s seventh win in a row as the team improved to 12-3. Poquoson took a 1-0 lead in the third inning as Shannon Rollins singled and scored on Amy Putnam’s…

Poquoson 12 NK 0 (baseball)

By Alan Chamberlain | May 7, 2008 11:07 am

On the mound, Poquoson lefthander Kyle Crockett befuddled New Kent’s batters. The host Trojans managed just one hit off Crockett in four innings as the Islanders cruised to a 12-0 Bay Rivers District decision in five innings last Wednesday. “[Crockett’s] a good pitcher. He throws strikes and hits his spots,” Trojan coach Ronnie Cox said. “We didn’t underestimate him. We knew he’d pitch well.” Mitchell Baker became the only Trojan to touch Crockett, jumping on the Islander hurler’s first pitch with two away in the second inning for a line drive single into center field. Baker stole second but was…

NK, Bruton deadlock at 1-1

By Alan Chamberlain | May 7, 2008 11:06 am

A late second half goal enabled Bruton’s Panthers to overtake New Kent’s host Lady Trojans at 1-1. The teams then played to a standoff in two overtime periods to settle for a Bay Rivers District soccer tie. Despite the outcome, New Kent remains on track for the school’s first ever post-season district tournament appearance. For now, the Lady Trojans are holding sixth place in the district standings at 2-4-1. They are 4-6-1 in all games. “We took control and sat on a 1-0 lead and that’s hard to do in soccer,” Lady Trojan coach Chad Honeycutt said. “One is never…

By Alan Chamberlain | May 7, 2008 10:57 am

New Kent’s Lady Trojans built a 4-0 first half lead and then held off a late second half York surge to upset the visiting Falcons 4-3 in Bay Rivers District soccer. The hosts owned their 4-0 advantage with just under six minutes left in the opening half, but the Falcons scored just before the break and added two quick goals over a two-minute span in the game’s waning moments. The Falcons dominated in the second half, firing eight shots on goal to New Kent’s three. “That was the longest 40 minutes of my life,” New Kent coach Chad Honeycutt said…

Hammill single lifts NK, 9-8

By Alan Chamberlain | May 7, 2008 10:55 am

Bat in hand, Al Hammill approached the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning with the bases loaded and two away. Back in the seventh, he faced a similar situation with the game-winning run poised at third, but struck out to send New Kent’s Bay Rivers District baseball showdown with Lafayette’s invading Rams into extra innings. To say his previous trip to the plate weighed heavily on his mind would have been an understatement. “I was thinking definitely don’t do what I did the last time,” the Trojans’ first baseman said. He didn’t. With one swing of the bat,…
