CC recovers, topples ARGS

By Alan Chamberlain | February 18, 2010 2:53 pm

Charles City’s Panthers watched an 11-point second half lead disappear, but a combination of defense and sinking just enough free throws down the stretch preserved a 55-46 Tri-Rivers District basketball victory over the visitors from Appomattox Regional Governor’s School. The visiting Dragons also contributed to the Panther cause in the late stages of Monday’s contest by not scoring. Appomattox trailed 45-44 with 3:23 left in the game, but did not score again until more than three minutes later. By then, the hosts had converted eight of 15 free throws to put the game safely in the win column. Charles City…

Win 500 ranks Allen among elite coaches

By Alan Chamberlain | February 18, 2010 2:48 pm

In the realm of personal accomplishments, New Kent High School basketball coach Ed Allen would rather have the spotlight shine elsewhere. He’ll say it’s his system and players that have made Trojan basketball one of the most successful programs in the state. But for a moment last Friday during Senior Night and New Kent’s final regular season home game, Allen took center stage as players, fans, and friends celebrated his 500th career win. With his daughter, Laurie Allen Weaver, announcing the occasion over the gym’s public address system, his son, Steven, a senior guard and this year’s leading scorer, along…

NK whips Lions

By Alan Chamberlain | February 18, 2010 2:47 pm

Unleashing their signature pressure defense, New Kent’s Trojans quickly forced Warhill’s visiting Lions into submission in a contest decided in the early going. In the end, New Kent owned a 93-41 basketball triumph capping the school’s Senior Night last Friday. The Trojans vaulted to a 13-2 first quarter lead and did not allow a Lion field goal until the period’s 2:30 mark. Warhill managed a mild second quarter rally, reducing what had been a 19-point Trojan lead to a dozen at 37-25. But Trojan guards Kaleb Lamb and Justin Williams buried back-to-back treys to up the advantage to 43-25 and…

Charles City provides surprise challenge for New Kent

By Alan Chamberlain | February 18, 2010 2:45 pm

In their first meeting, New Kent’s Trojans opened a 20-point first quarter lead and scored 100 points on Charles City’s Panthers in a game that left no doubt as to the outcome after the opening minutes. In last Saturday’s rematch at Charles City, the host Panthers came out determined to avoid a repeat. And they came armed with a pink and white basketball. Charles City refused to allow New Kent, the state’s number one ranked Group AA basketball team, to pull away in the first half. But as the second half worn on, the Trojans’ experience and depth took its…

Embezzlement saga drags on in NK Circuit Court

By Alan Chamberlain | February 18, 2010 2:39 pm

After five scheduled court dates over the past four months have failed to fulfill a plea deal whereby a woman, who embezzled more than $12,000 from her New Kent employer, pays back the money, a county circuit court judge has run out of patience. Ruling on Feb. 8, an exasperated Judge Thomas B. Hoover revoked bond for Ashley Morgan Long, ordering the defendant held in jail until a new trial can be scheduled before a substitute judge. Long, 28, of 8931 Germont Ave., Richmond, is charged with one count of embezzlement stemming from $12,627.76 taken from New Kent Animal Hospital…

Probation violation lands teen from shooting back in court

By Alan Chamberlain | February 18, 2010 2:38 pm

A Williamsburg-area teen, who prosecutors say set the wheels in motion for a 2008 botched armed robbery in the Lanexa area of New Kent that left another teen dead from a gunshot wound, returned to county circuit court last week on a probation violation. Judge Thomas B. Hoover revoked all of a six-month suspended jail sentence in the case of John William Chaffin on Feb. 8, almost a year after the defendant’s trial on charges of attempted robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery. Last March, Chaffin cut a plea deal whereby the attempted robbery count was dropped and the conspiracy…

Bicycle paths proposed to connect NK, CC courthouses

By Alan Chamberlain | February 18, 2010 2:32 pm

A multimillion-dollar project aimed at creating bicycle paths linking New Kent Courthouse and Charles City Courthouse is nearing the start of its first phase. When all phases are completed, bicycle lanes will flank both sides of the entire length of Route 155 through New Kent and Charles City, making the road safer for bicyclists and motorists, officials close to the project say. Plans are now in works for phase one in New Kent, starting on the north side of the new bridge over the Chickahominy River canal on 155, just north of the Charles City line. Phase one then extends…

CC blasts Windsor, 89-40

By Alan Chamberlain | February 4, 2010 2:56 pm

Charles City’s Tri-Rivers District basketball class with Windsor’s invading Dukes amounted to little more than a layup shooting drill for the host Panthers. The hosts pressed the Dukes into submission early on, scoring the game’s first 24 points and never looking back en route to an easy 89-40 decision. Charles City led 24-2 after one quarter of the Feb. 4 affair and 48-6 at halftime. By the break, 11 of 13 players on the Panther roster had scored and the rest would join the act in the second half. Panther coach Sharone Bailey said his squad had not practiced in…
