Panthers sweep past K&Q

By Alan Chamberlain | April 1, 2010 12:21 pm

Charles City pitcher Roger Williams tossed a no-hitter while striking out 12 and helped his own cause at the plate with a solo homer and ground rule double as the Panthers downed King & Queen’s visiting Tigers 11-1. The March 23 non-district outcome ended on baseball’s 10-run slaughter rule in the sixth inning and evened Charles City’s record at 1-1. “Not too bad,” Panther coach Irving Bradby said afterward concerning Williams’ effort. “He had a good day,” Bradby added. “We’re trying to get him in to pitch more, and he’s more focused on baseball this year.” Williams’ teammates, meanwhile, helped…

NK School Board members adopt budget with job cuts

By Alan Chamberlain | April 1, 2010 12:06 pm

A near empty auditorium befuddled the handful of New Kent residents who attended Monday’s School Board public hearing and vote on schools’ $23.9 million budget for the next fiscal year. Due to an ongoing economic crisis, the budget is $2 million below the current year’s $25.9 million figure and features 29.5 job cuts, including 17.5 teachers, and no employee pay raises. Ordinarily, those numbers would be expected to lift at least a few eyebrows. “The first thing that hits me as I walk in tonight is this room is very vacant,” Quinton resident and parent Brad Williams told board members…

Thrift store part of worthy cause

By Community Member | April 1, 2010 12:03 pm

A converted garage/outbuilding overflows with clothing, shoes, books, household and electronic goods, and other donated items. Outside are more racks filled with clothes. A mat placed on the ground nearby is covered with toys. A 75 percent off sale is under way at the “Thrift Spot,” located at 18457 New Kent Highway in Barhamsville where Stage Road intersects Route 30. But even with a deep discount on already low prices, barely a dent will be made in inventory. Out back there’s a 53-foot long trailer, part of a tractor/trailer rig donated by JC Pallet Co., nearly filled with items waiting…

CC schools exploring bus route revamp to address shortfall

By Alan Chamberlain | April 1, 2010 12:02 pm

Charles City County school officials must whittle another $183,000 off next year’s anticipated expense line in order to balance expected revenue in the next fiscal year’s budget. And to do so, a two-tier bus schedule plus pay cuts for bus drivers, teacher aides, and cafeteria workers are up front for consideration. Heading into last Thursday’s budget work session, county School Board members knew they faced closing a $575,000 gap between their $12 million 2010-11 budget passed last month and an estimated revenue figure of just under $11.5 million. Superintendent Janet Crawley reported that most of the difference has been erased…

CC proposing 4-cent tax hike to fund $21 million budget

By Alan Chamberlain | April 1, 2010 12:01 pm

A 4-cent real estate tax increase along with a proposed $21 million budget in Charles City is headed to public hearing before the county’s Board of Supervisors. During their March 23 meeting, board members authorized advertising the proposals in local newspapers. A public hearing on the tax increase is set for April 19, 7 p.m. in the county government building. A hearing on the overall budget follows at 7:30 p.m. Earlier reports indicated a 3-cent tax hike, but further tweaking of numbers from the county’s recent property reassessment lowered the equalized tax rate from 67 to 66 cents. Thus, county…

Tax cut, extra school money in NK’s future?

By Alan Chamberlain | April 1, 2010 11:57 am

New Kent County school employees and taxpayers could use a little good news in a time of economic troubles. Yesterday, they got some. Revenue appears to be outpacing expenses by almost $2.3 million, based on preliminary figures County Administrator Cabell Lawton presented to Board of Supervisors members during Thursday’s work session. Thus, an additional $1.1 million allocation for county schools tops a list of Lawton’s recommendations on how supervisors can use the money. Also on the list is erasing some of the county’s debt along with an item of keen interest to taxpayers — reducing the county’s real estate tax…
