By Alan Chamberlain | April 15, 2010 11:09 am

A felony abduction charge lodged against a North Carolina father, who snatched his 11-year-old daughter early last January from a New Kent County hospital, has been dropped. But the prosecution has the right to reinstate the charge and seek extradition if the father violates probation within the next three years. The father, Lemuel Robert Cartwright, 57, of Bath, N.C., pleaded guilty on April 7 in New Kent Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court to a misdemeanor count of obstruction of justice. Under terms of a plea deal hammered out between prosecutor Linwood Gregory and Cartwright’s attorney, Terry Osborne, a felony child…

Real estate tax rate of 67 cents proposed in New Kent

By Alan Chamberlain | April 15, 2010 11:07 am

A 67-cent real estate tax rate is being proposed to fund New Kent’s fiscal 2011 budget that now stands at $49.9 million. County Administrator Cabell Lawton presented the draft budget to county Board of Supervisors members during the board’s Monday night meeting. Supervisors have scheduled an April 28 budget work session, coinciding with their regular monthly work session, in preparation for a May 10 public hearing. The proposed tax levy is a penny below a 68-cent equalized rate determined after last year’s property reassessment. County residents currently pay 73 cents per $100 of assessed value. If the 67-cent proposal stands,…

NK school, county budgets far apart despite job cuts

By Alan Chamberlain | April 1, 2010 12:57 pm

Job cuts in New Kent schools stand at 36½, but that’s just for now. If a $460,000 discrepancy in county money cannot be ironed out, another 10½ positions could be on the chopping block. County School Board members voted 5-0 on Monday to approve a $26.1 million budget for the 2009-10 fiscal year that begins July 1. The figure is about $1 million less than the current year’s $27.1 million budget. School officials built their budget on $630,000 in fewer local dollars. But county officials place the decrease $460,000 higher at $1,090,000. If the county figure holds firm, schools could…

By Alan Chamberlain | April 1, 2010 12:28 pm

With under a minute to go in the second and final overtime period, New Kent’s home soccer opener with West Point’s Pointers appeared on the verge of a 2-2 tie. But the Trojans’ Kyle Leckie wanted no part of a deadlock. Taking a pass just outside the box from teammate Travis Nice, Leckie hooked a shot high and over the head of Pointer keeper Alex Dixon. The ball found the right corner of the goal to hand New Kent a 3-2 lead. The hosts then weathered the last few seconds to secure their first win and even their record at…
