Turmoil erupts after board cuts public comment session

By Alan Chamberlain | April 29, 2010 10:42 am

A war of words that has been escalating in recent months between Charles City school officials and a handful of persistent school system critics erupted into a full-blown confrontation at last week’s School Board meeting. Critics reacted angrily after the board voted to amend future agendas by permanently removing a portion of its monthly meetings set aside for public comment on non-agenda items. The measure goes into effect at the board’s May meeting. In the furor that ensued, board chairman Roy Campbell ordered one critic to leave the speaker’s podium and sit down and ejected another from the meeting. No…

By Alan Chamberlain | April 15, 2010 11:32 am

New Kent’s Trojans came back from the dead, wiping out a 7-0 deficit and forcing extra innings in their Bay Rivers District baseball clash with Grafton’s visiting Clippers. But the Clippers scored twice in the eighth inning and made those runs stand up for a 10-8 win. The April 2 outcome dropped New Kent to 2-4 in Bay Rivers and 3-4 overall. “We didn’t do anything for the first three innings,” New Kent coach Ronnie Cox said, pointing to a Grafton offensive explosion that saw the Clippers take a 1-0 lead in the first, add four more in the second,…

New Kent sweeps series with West Point

By Alan Chamberlain | April 15, 2010 11:27 am

Four straight sixth inning walks coupled with a series of wild pitches enabled New Kent’s host Trojans to break open a close non-district baseball encounter with West Point’s Pointers. The hosts then held off a last ditch Pointer rally in the seventh and final frame to post a 6-4 win. Monday’s decision evened New Kent’s record at 4-4 and marked a vast departure from the teams’ initial clash at West Point during which the Trojans dominated on the way to a 14-2 victory in five innings. In the latest outing, West Point out-hit the Trojans 8-4. “This was much different…

By Alan Chamberlain | April 15, 2010 11:27 am

New Kent’s Trojans knew they faced one of the best teams in Bay Rivers District soccer in taking on Tabb’s invading Tigers. And it didn’t take long for the visitors to prove it. One minute into the April 1 contest, the Tigers punched in a goal to take the lead for good. Five more goals would follow in the first half alone, including three resulting from designed plays off direct and indirect free kicks. More of the same followed after the break. In the end, Tabb claimed a 10-0 victory with the match halted midway through the second half on…

Renovation costs in for NK library, School Board space

By Alan Chamberlain | April 15, 2010 11:16 am

Cost estimates are in for transforming what is dubbed New Kent’s “historic school” into office space for the county’s School Board and a new home for the county’s Heritage Public Library branch. The two buildings that front Route 249 are targeted for renovation. And based on estimates developed by the county’s General Services Department, the price tag for upgrading the original structure built in the 1930s is less than the cost estimated for the newer building that was constructed about 20 years later. “Believe it or not, the 1930s building is in better shape than the other building,” General Services…

Another cell phone tower will soon be rising above the New Kent landscape. And judging from statistics released by the county sheriff’s office, crime is also on the rise in the county.
