Planners give nod to tower
New Kent’s Planning Commission is recommending county Board of Supervisors’ approval of a permit request to build a 195-foot, self-supporting, lattice style cell phone communications tower on a 25-acre site about 1,000 feet northeast of the end of Topeka Road in Quinton. Planners voted 9-0 with one abstention Monday night to forward a favorable recommendation to supervisors on the request by Richmond-based National Communications Towers and property owners R. No outdoor fire ban for now, dry weather could force action
Local fire officials are not pushing the panic button just yet, but there are hints of an outdoor burning ban being enacted if the current pattern of hot, dry weather continues. After conferring Saturday with state Department of Forestry officials, who have been monitoring moisture content in the ground, New Kent Fire Chief Tommy Hicks said there are no plans to institute a burning ban for now. “At the moment, the thunderstorms and rain showers we’ve received over the past couple of weeks have provided a little bit of added relief,” he said. “There will be no ban on Monday,…

Virginia Heat 12U girl’s softball team finished 9-1 on the way to the championship of the Memorial Day Fastpitch Softball Tournament held Memorial Day weekend in Chambersburg, Pa. Two New Kent County residents, Stephanie Torrence and Marisa “MoMo” Bush, are team members. The Heat beat Lake Shore Lighting from Maryland 7-6 in the title game. Forty-one teams from seven states participated in the three-day tournament. The Heat lost their first pool play game to the Washington (Pa.) The NKYA Rookie Division Dodgers finish the regular season 12-0 and won the end of the season tournament. The Dodgers finish the season with a 14-0 combined record. In the end of season rookie tournament championship game, the Dodgers faced the number two ranked Cardinals. Going into the championship game, the Cardinals had a record of 12-2. Drug dealer faces 80 years
A convicted drug dealer has close to 80 years in prison hanging over his head as a result of sentencing in New Kent Circuit Court on four cocaine-related charges. Termara Delvon Brown, 27, of 3303 Branch Avenue in Richmond, had been found guilty earlier on three counts of crack cocaine distribution and one count of cocaine possession with intent to distribute. At sentencing on June 28, Judge Thomas B. Hoover handed the defendant 20 years on each charge, suspending all but six months for the next 40 years. CC kennel owner appealing board’s use permit denial
The owner of a Charles City dog kennel, who in May was denied an operating permit by the county’s Board of Supervisors, has filed paperwork asking for a circuit court review of all documents and materials that led to the board’s decision. Linda Howard, owner of Big Dog Kennel at 5226 North Warriner Road, filed what is termed a writ of certiorari in county circuit court on June 23. Attempted capital murder indictments handed up in CC
A Hopewell man, who authorities say led Charles City deputies on a 100 mile per hour chase through the county before crashing a borrowed pickup truck into a pair of sheriff’s office cruisers, has been indicted on nine felony charges. NK supervisors amending fire lane parking for 2nd time
For the second time in less than a year, New Kent’s Board of Supervisors is revising county law with regard to motor vehicles parked illegally in lanes reserved for fire and emergency vehicles. A year ago, a New Kent General District Court judge noted the county law, as written then, had no means of enforcement and treated illegal parking as a criminal offense rather than a traffic violation. Charles City residents sound off on proposed noise law
Charles City Board of Supervisors members are considering comments voiced on the county’s proposed noise ordinance amendment and are planning to take action during their July 27 meeting. Supervisors listened intently as a dozen county residents weighed in during a June 22 public hearing on the proposed law. Some expressed concern that the law could adversely affect their business and special events while others complained about specific noise incidents generated by neighbors, private parties, and auto speakers.
