Charles City’s budget picture may not be as gloomy as first thought, but county officials still expect to be making budget cuts this fiscal year to offset an estimated deficit now pegged at $300,000. County administrator Jack Miniclier delivered the news to Board of Supervisors members during the group’s Oct. 26 meeting. The anticipated revenue shortfall, brought about by declining dollars from Waste Management’s landfill in the county, stood at $1.2 million in August. But recently, trash amounts have picked up thus lowering the estimated deficit. “We’re being optimistic Waste Management will provide us with the minimum amount of funds…

Virginia Department of Transportation officials met with close to 50 residents inside the Chickahominy Shores Community Center on Oct. 21 to announce a project to raise the road is in the works. At issue is Route 627 (South Waterside Drive) where the road parallels the railroad track and crosses…

Jim Noctor won Tuesday’s write-in campaign for the District 1 seat on New Kent County’s School Board. Noctor, a building inspector/plan reviewer for Henrico County, received 282 write-in ballots to 164 for runner-up Corey Blunt, a former county school employee. Suzanne Kesler, an accountant with a Chesterfield firm, finished third with 18 votes while four other individuals received two apiece and another nine landed one each. “I didn’t see anybody really stepping up, and we needed somebody,” Noctor, 53, said when contacted Wednesday about seeking the post. His family connections to education also helped, he added. His father spent 35…

When asked by New Kent Circuit Court trial Judge Thomas Nance if he was ready for trial, a seemingly confident John Steven Carter blurted, “Let’s go!” Four hours later, Carter, who once told a local magistrate his occupation is “medicinal botanist,” stood convicted of two felony drug charges and now faces up to 40 years in prison. Last Friday’s trial stemmed from October 2008 when authorities seized 346 marijuana plants inside a sophisticated “grow room” Carter, 58, had created in an upstairs room of the house he rented at 15600 Pocahontas Trail (Route 60) in Lanexa. But proving Carter’s guilt…

Franklin’s Broncos lived up to expectations as the state’s number four Group A football team, opening a 21-0 first quarter lead over Charles City’s host Panthers. By halftime, the visitors led 33-16 and appeared on the way to ruining Charles City’s homecoming celebration. But in building a 7-0 record, Franklin had not encountered a team as resilient — and talented — as Charles City. The Broncos learned that lesson in the second half. Charles City shut down the vaunted Bronco running attack, allowing just one touchdown after the break. The hosts returned the second half kickoff for a score and…

Lack of offense on the part of New Kent’s Lady Trojans proved costly as Hampton Roads Academy’s visiting Navigators used a lone second half goal to post a 1-0 field hockey win. New Kent got off only four shots in the Sept. 23 contest. HRA, meanwhile, managed just 10, but only one was needed to decide the issue. Ten minutes into the second half, HRA’s Marnie Blalock punched in the game winner. Then with four minutes remaining and her offense sputtering, Lady Trojan coach Julie Ellis called time in an attempt to fire up her squad with a pep talk….

A pair of first half trips into the red zone that resulted in no points came back to haunt Charles City’s Panthers. Instead of a possible halftime deadlock, Christchurch’s invading Seahorses owned a 14-0 lead at intermission. The visitors then withstood a third quarter Panther rally to post a 36-14 non-district football win. Friday afternoon’s clash evened Charles City’s record at 2-2 while the Seahorses improved to 4-1. “In the midst of our mistakes, we played with dignity and it’s something we can work on going down the district stretch,” said Panther head coach Steward Greene. “We have to go…

Twice in the second half, New Kent’s host Trojans owned two touchdown leads, the last coming with just over nine minutes left in the game. But the seemingly comfortable advantage evaporated as the clock wound down. York’s Falcons tied the contest with 1:25 to go on quarterback Alex Johnston’s 21-yard hookup with wide receiver Anthony Honey. Then the reliable toe of place-kicker Johnnie Howell booted the game-winning conversion for a 35-34 York win. Saturday night’s bitter outcome denied New Kent’s quest for its first football win, dropping the Trojans to 0-3 in Bay Rivers District and 0-4 overall. The hosts…

Don’t look for phrases such as “both teams playing solid defense” and “both offenses showing little spark” in any account of Charles City’s football encounter with Lancaster’s Red Devils. Defense took the night off. Thankfully, offense did not. After three hours plus of big plays and unstoppable drives that produced 18 touchdowns and more than 1,600 total yards, the visiting Red Devils walked away with a 70-62 win in overtime. Both teams entered unbeaten at 2-0 for the Sept. 24 clash. “If the defense had stood just a little bit, the outcome might have been different,” said Charles City head…
