As a proud parent of Africa Majestic Grooms, I would like to congratulate my daughter for successfully completing the Senate Page program as a member of the Class of 2015. She is the first African-American female in several years from Charles City County to participate in the program. Her class was the largest class in the history of the Senate Page program. ‘A Taste of New Kent’ returns May 9

New Kent’s Chamber of Commerce “A Taste of New Kent” wine festival returns Saturday, May 9, from 11 a.m.-6 p.m., at New Kent Winery. The event will present a variety of wine tasting from a number of local wineries in Virginia, as well as music provided by “Kings of Swing.” Local food truck vendors will also be present to provide food, as well as skilled crafters with handmade items for purchase. USDA offers one-time extension to update base acres, yield history

United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has provided a one-time extension deadline to update base acres or yield history to the Agriculture Risk Coverage (ARC) and Price Loss Coverage (PLC) programs. “This is an important decision for producers, because these programs provide financial protection against unexpected changes in the marketplace,” said Agricultural Secretary Tom Vilsack. “we’re working to ensure that farmers got the time, information, and opportunities to have those final conversations, review their data, and to visit the Farm Service Agency to make those decisions.” If no changes are made to yield history or base acres by Mar. 31,…

New Kent Scholastic Bowl team finishes third in states

New Kent High School’s Scholastic Bowl team earned a third place finish in Group 3A competition last Saturday at the College of William & Mary. The team missed out on second place by one question. They finished the season with an overall record of 26-2. The team won the district and regional championships prior to its finish at the state level.
