Drumheller named to Randolph-Macon Dean’s List

William R. Drumheller Jr., a 2014 graduate of New Kent High School, has been named to Randolph-Macon College’s Dean’s List. The former valedictorian and Quinton resident posted a 4.16 GPA to earn the recognition. He is currently a freshman at the college and plans to major in computer science.

New Kent County Fair moves to August

The 44th annual New Kent County Fair will be held a month earlier than normal in 2015. The event is scheduled for Aug. 14-16 at Colonial Downs. Information concerning exhibits, vendors, pageant, and entertainment will be available at www.newkentcountyfair.com beginning Mar. 1. Volunteers and ideas are needed for the fair. A general meeting will be held by the New Kent County Fair association on Thursday, Feb. 12, 7 p.m. at the New Kent Administration building.

Golderos named to President’s List at New River Community College

Reuben Golderos, a resident of Providence Forge, has been placed on the President’s List at New River Community College. Golderos was recognized for his academnic achievement for the 2014 fall semester. To be named to the President’s List, a student must accomplish a 3.5 grade-point average while taking a minimum of 12 college-level semester hours.

“Backpack Initiative” brings education to forefront in Charles City

“We’re going to see a transformation in learning that is very exciting.” Those words were spoken by Charles City superintendent of schools David Gaston as he barely held his enthusiasm in during last Friday’s demonstration of a 1-to-1 KUNO launch, better known as the “Backpack Initiative.” Supported by Virginia’s Department of Education (DOE), the initiative provides KUNO educational tablets (small, touchscreen computers) to each student in the county’s school system. Trojan TV opens doors for New Kent students

Each morning at approximately 7:41 a.m. at New Kent High School, students take their seats for their first period class. More importantly, Promethean Boards linked to the Internet tune into many classrooms’ favorite station: Trojan TV. A simple concept of taking morning announcements and giving them a visual appeal has become a hit at the high school. In turn, that idea has blossomed into an opportunity for students in the classroom of Career and Technical Education teacher David Haviland.
