New Kent High School Class of 2021 overcomes challenges to remain #NewKentStrong

Different venue. Different circumstances. Yet, still #NewKentStrong. Supporters of 214 graduates of New Kent High School’s Class of 2021 gathered inside of the high school’s gymnasium during Friday night’s commencement ceremony. New Kent High School Class of 2021 Valedictorian- Isaac Barber

Isaac Barber posted a grade-point average of 4.8 as valedictorian for New Kent High School’s Class of 2021. He attended the Chesapeake Bay Governor’s School. He was a member of New Kent High School’s track team, soccer team, golf team, and also participated in club soccer. Isaac will be attending Washington and Lee University where he will study either mathematics or science while continuing his career as a member of the track and field team. He is the son of Ross and Sarah Grier Barber.

New Kent High School Class of 2021 Salutatorian- Haylie Bayens

Haylie Bayens is salutatorian of New Kent High School’s Class of 2021 with a grade-point average of 4.601. She is the president of the BETA Club, organizer of the school’s Livestrong and YADAPP organization, member of New Kent’s Spirit Club, captain of the school’s field hockey team, and a member of the soccer team. Haylie will be attending Newberry College where she plans to pursue a degree in nursing while continuing her field hockey career. She is the daughter of Carly and Dean Bayens.

Four students earn Dean’s List accolades at College of William & Mary

Four local students were named to the Dean’s List at the College of William and Mary for the Spring 2021 semester. Abbey Coutu of Barhamsville, Asia Prentiss of Charles City, Josephine Houska of Lanexa, and Harrison Keen of Providence Forge were all recognized for their academic achievement. In order to be named to the Dean’s List, a student must accumulate a quality point average of 3.6 or higher while taking at least 12 credit hours.

James Madison University announces local graduates

Several local students graduated from James Madison University following May 2021 commencement exercises. Former New Kent standout swimmer Julianna Jones was recognized as an honor graduate. She graduated Magna Cum Laude, earning a degree in health sciences. Also graduating from James Madison University was Barhamsville resident Sara Ward (health sciences), Lanexa resident Tiffany Tolley (biology), Providence Forge resident Jada Cotman (psychology), and Quinton resident Teresa Hohman (hospitality management).

Locals earn degrees from College of William and Mary

Four local residents recently completed their studies at the College of William and Mary following commencement ceremonies in May. Mackenzie Adkins and Asia Prentiss, both of Charles City, each earned Bachelor of Arts degrees from the college. Providence Forge residents Harrison Keen and Yvonne Sanchez both graduated from the school with Bachelor of Science degrees.
