Editorial: A message to the local high school classes of 2021

By Robb Johnson | June 8, 2021 10:30 pm

This message is for the Class of 2021. We need to speak on the more positive things when it comes to the graduates from Charles City and New Kent. This past year has been long for everybody and quite frankly, you deserve to be upset knowing that time was taken away from your friends along with school. The journey has been long and at times and it probably looked like you would not make the finish line. However, your time is now to enjoy the festivities. Take everything in because you deserve this moment. You all have worked hard to…

Letter to the Editor: States intended plans for tracts of land in New Kent County

By Community Member | June 8, 2021 8:27 pm

As we recover from the rigors of COVID-19 and get back to traveling, a few citizens have inquired about the plans for some highly visible tracts of land I own that presently are being cleared of most of their trees. These tracts, plus others previously cleared, are locate along Route 155 (north and south of Interstate 64), Olivet Church Road (north and south of Interstate 64), Route 249 (east and west of Route 106), and at the end of Cumberland Road. Most holdings are marked by white fences and gates, with a distinctive white sign. As a resident of New…

Editorial: Let these past 15 months teach you a lifetime of lessons

By Andre Jones | June 2, 2021 7:29 am

Nobody knows when it is truly safe to return to “the new normal.” But when we do, let’s do it with a mindset of making this world a better place. For the last 15 months, many of us have stayed isolated or at home by ourselves. Some of us have lost loved ones, lost jobs, and lost hope in society with the transgressions that have taken place. But all is not lost as doors begin to open. I hope that we can each humble ourselves and respect each other more. If 15 months in keeping to ourselves and not sharing…

Work ethic and love for writing leads to Charles City native scripting television episode

By Andre Jones | May 30, 2021 11:59 am

Success comes to those who work hard and are able to step out in places to be uncomfortable. For one Charles City County native, a talent that never left him at a young age has landed him an opportunity to script an episode of a popular television program. Leno Bradby Jr. took his love for the arts and transformed it into a career that he thrives for and enjoys. And now at the age of 28, he is the youngest person to write a script for an episode of Tyler Perry’s “House of Payne” on BET (Black Entertainment Television). The…

Editorial: Three points that I have evaluated so far in 2021

By Robb Johnson | May 25, 2021 10:32 pm

This year has been tough with the virus and other things going on in America. We all must step back and really evaluate everything that has happened with a grain of salt. I feel that there are three things that we have learned that are critically important going forward and I emphasize this strongly. The first lesson is paying teachers is a must. Teachers are very important and will always be important. There should never be a debate on how we should pay our teachers. We should just do it. I do not want to hear about debt when we…
