Editorial: Going with your instinct can lead to additional benefits

By Andre Jones | August 14, 2018 12:02 pm

Sometimes natural instincts can lead to a person changing his or her mind and making a decision that benefits them in the long run. Such an experience took place last week for me. After a wonderful day with my sister and nephew, we elected to go get some ice cream. However, instead of going to a franchise company we elected to go to a local New Kent business to give back to the community (and the fact my nephew wanted blue ice cream). Upon approaching the facility, we were greeted with a happy smile of the owner working the window….

Heritage Public Library is now accepting passport applications at its New Kent location by appointment. Travelers can choose appointments during library open hours, which include evenings and weekends. “We saw there was a need in our area for a passport acceptance center,” said Heritage Public Library director Chandra McPherson. “Our application to the state department was accepted, staff was trained, and we were able to begin a ‘soft opening’ of this service in July.” Passport applicants can review the requirements for passports on the library’s website, www.heritagepubliclibrary.org. Editorial: Self-criticism and responsibility makes you a better person

By Andre Jones | August 7, 2018 5:35 pm

The toughest thing about understanding who you are as a person is self-criticism. And I will be the first to tell anybody I’m not perfect. I definitely have a lot of flaws. But there has been a theme that I’ve experienced within the last week that proves to me that while I may have flaws, there are some situations that are beyond my control. Letter to the editor: Says Charles City needs only three supervisors

By Community Member | August 1, 2018 11:03 am

For 12 years I have watched Charles City grow in stature, if not in population. I have watched a public-school system improve from third worst in the State to somewhere in the middle. They even won recognition from a major news publication as one of the 17 most improved school systems in the country. That occurred because of a change of school administration, a courageous school board that made good choices, and a three-member board of supervisors who supported those changes in both word and deed. Charles City is a racially-mixed community that is approximately 46 percent African-American, 43 percent…
