New Kent Bass Angler’s, consisting of New Kent High School students, recently competed in the 2017 Virginia Bass Federation High School State Championship on June 10-11 on the Chickahominy River. Team member Tyler Colgin emerged as the state champion in the 16-18 year-old division, netting a total weight of 15 pounds, four ounces in the tournament. Teammates Justin Bostic (3rd), Bryce Henley (5th), and Edward Davis (7th) also finished in the top ten. Two local students were named to the College of William & Mary’s Dean’s List for the 2017 Spring semester. Erin O’Connell of Barhamsville and Jonah Sweeney of Providence Forge received the accolades according to a press release. In order to be named to the Dean’s List, a student must accumulate a quality point average of 3.6 while taking at least 12 credit hours.
Rebecca Bradford, a native of Quinton, was named to the Presidential Honor Roll List for the 2016-17 academic year at Catawba College in North Carolina. Students was one of only 148 students to achieve the recognition. In order to be named to the honor roll, a student must achieve a grade-point average of 3.7 and average 30 or more semester hours.
Candidate Ed Gillespie released his plan to remove barriers to help in job creation for all Virginians. His focus on job creation is the reason I’ll vote for him on June 13. Being self-employed, I understand the difficulties small businesses struggle with due to government regulations. Virginia’s economic growth rate was at two percent last year. This is just unacceptable as other states have growth rates and are opening up new jobs while Virginia lags behinds. Virginia’s next governor has to be focused on fixing this problem. Amber Roudette, a 2009 New Kent High School graduate, recently earned a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree from Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine. Roudette graduated as one of three valedictorians from New Kent. She furthered her studies at the University of Richmond, earning a degree in 2013. She will be working in Waynesboro. Roudette is the daughter of Tim and Diane Harris of New Kent.
Albert FitzPatrick, a Quinton native, was named to the Dean’s List of Bridgewater College for the Spring 2017 semester. In order to be named to the Dean’s List, a student must have obtained a 3.4 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. FitzPatrick recently graduated the college with a degree in business administration.
A New Kent County resident recently completed his studies at Radford University. Timothy R. Jones graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with an emphasis in Graphic Arts during May 6 commencement ceremonies. He intends to pursue a career in the field. Jones is a 2013 graduate of Walsingham Academy and the son of Dr. Raymond Jones and Mrs. Joan W. Jones of Providence Forge.
