Abigail Black, a Charles City resident and rising sophomore at Mary Baldwin College, was named to the school’s Honor’s List for the Spring 2016 semester. In order to be named to the list, a student must accumulate a grade-point average of 3.75 or higher while taking at least 12 hours of classes. She is the daughter of Michelle and Randy Black.
Several Charles City and New Kent residents were among the 596 students who earned degrees and certificates during the 44th commencement of Rappahannock Community College on May 13. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that the nomination period for farmers and ranchers to serve on the Farm Service Agency (FSA) county committees began June 15. To be eligible to serve on a FAS county committee, a person must participate or cooperate in the FSA administered program, be eligible to vote in a county committee election and reside in the local administrative area where they are nominated. The Library of Virginia awarded a grant of $9,443 for to Charles City County for preservation of historical documents. In a May meeting, the Circuit Court Records Grants Review Board considered 97 applications submitted by 70 localities to assist with records preservation. After an evaluation, 73 grants were awarded and totaled close to $900,000. Charles City’s amount allows them to preserve Deed Book 14 (1880-1887), Deed Book 12 (1867-1873), and General Index to Deeds Grantor (1789-1913).
