The University of Virginia Alumni Association selected Thomas Snead, a Providence Forge resident and senior at Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School, as a 2016 Legacy Scholar. Snead was chosen as one of three recipients out of a pool of 129 applicants to receive the award. He currently posts a 4.24 GPA and is a member of numerous organizations including the National English Honor Society, German National Honor Society, and the National Honor Society. He also participated in golf, baseball, and basketball. Each Legacy Scholar will receive a $5,000 annual renewable scholarship and a Life Membership into the UVA Alumni Association.
Arts Alive is offering two summer camps for interested children at West Point public schools. The Summer Arts Camp, sponsored by Charles City-James City-New Kent-York County Farm Bureau is June 27-July 1, 9 a.m.-3:15 p.m. Classes included dance, visual art, music and more. Courses are available for grade kindergarten to age 14 with a coast of $45 for each week-long class or $150 for four week-long classes. Missoula Children’s Theatre Camp is Aug. 8-13. New Kent Historical Society’s Museum will have a grand opening on Saturday, May 21, 10 a.m. Located at 11740 New Kent Highway, the public will have the opportunity to tour the building and exhibits. The facility was originally a two-room school, believed to be built around 1870. Now owned by Corinth Baptist Church, the Historical Society was allowed the opportunity to preserve the building and create a museum of New Kent History. Jennifer Bell was recently promoted to Branch Manager at the EVB branch located in Quinton. “With 16 years of experience in customer service, Jennifer is committed to offering our customers at the Quinton branch the products and service they need to meet their financial needs,” said Joe Shearin, President and CEO of EVB. Bell is a graduate of Varina High School and participates in local community events including New Kent Parks and Recreation, New Kent Chamber of Commerce, and the Rotary Club of New Kent.
At this time of the year, most seniors in high school are focused on prom, graduation, and which path of life to take upon receiving their diploma. For one such student at New Kent High School, she already has her dream job lined up. Bryanna Krause will pursue a career in dancing after being offered and accepting a contract as a professional ballerina for the Richmond Ballet Second Company beginning this July. New Kent’s Chamber of Commerce presented seven scholarships to students of Bridging Communities Regional Career and Technical Center during its monthly meeting on Apr. 19. After a presentation from school director Dr. Stephen Trexler and students of the school, scholarship recipients were recognized by the Chamber for their academic achievements. Scholarship recipients are Cameron Baldwin ($1,000), Cheyanne Hall ($500), Preston Herman ($500), Amber Holmes ($500), Cullen Kettle ($500), Dominique Palermo ($500), and Phillip Simmons ($500). Scholarships were divided into the areas of four-year college attendees, continued education and apprenticeship programs, and workforce career.
