Jones earns master’s degree from Old Dominion University
Nikole Jones, a 2010 graduate of New Kent High School, earned her Master’s Degree in Sports Management during May 7 commencement ceremonies at Old Dominion University. Jones completed her undergraduate studies in business management at Norfolk State University in 2014. While there, she was a member of the Spartans’ softball team, competing at the Division I level. She is the daughter of Dwight and Angie Jones of New Kent.
New Kent Gymanstics Center expands
New Kent Gymnastics Center has expanded their new cheer facility. The center is planning to host recreational classes this upcoming fall that include adult gymnastics, cheer classes, and ninja training classes. The gym is the home of the Virginia Gems, who have competed in competitions in the state and nation. For information about the gym or programs, visit www.newkentgym.com.
Berkley graduates from Bridgewater College
Andrew D. Berkley, a native of Lanexa, graduated May 14 from Bridgewater College. Berkley was among 417 graduating seniors. He earned his degree in business administration.
New Kent refuse sites to accept new items
Beginning July 1, New Kent County and Central Virginia Waste Management Authority (CVWMA) will begin accepting new items at its refuse sites. Plastic containers and bottles with #1-#7 labels will be accepted at sites. Items include yogurt cups, sour cream containers, plastic take-out containers, and other plastic tubs. Cartons from milk, orange juice, and more will also be taken at the sites. Plastic bags, styrofoam, or rigid plastics such as toys and hoses will not be accepted. Letter to the Editor: Says location for solar facility should change
In reference to the proposed construction of a solar farm facility on property bordering New Kent Highway near Barhamsville, I doubt very seriously if much thought has been considered as to any adverse impacts that this facility may create after the construction is completed and the farm becomes operational. After completing research, there are problems that an operational solar farm can create. The greatest complaint is reflected light from the mirror’s that collect the sunlight, with the most dangerous of the high intensity reflecting upwards into the sky. Karaffa graduates from United States Marine Corps
Kevin Karaffa, a 2014 alum of New Kent High School and current junior at Radford University, graduated from the United States Marine Corps boot camp on Apr. 1 from Parris Island, South Carolina. Karaffa enlisted in the Marine Reserves and completed the course. On May 10, he graduated from Marine Combat training at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He was also selected as the only honor graduate from a company of 355 fellow cadets.
Meinhofer named to Shepherd University’s Dean List
Mathew Meinhofer, a native of Lanexa, was named to Shepherd University’s Dean List for the spring semester. To be eligible for the Dean’s Least, a student must maintain a 3.4 grade point average while taking at least 15 hours of coursework. Shepherd University is a public liberal arts university located in West Virginia.
Davis earns Master’s degree from VCU
W.R. “Trey” Davis III, a 2004 graduate of New Kent High School, will graduate from Virginia Commonwealth University on May 14 with a Master’s of Business Administration. Davis earned undergraduate degrees from Virginia Tech. There, he double-majored, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Bachelor of Science in Natural Resources. Davis has been employed by the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation since 2008. He works as a lobbyist, specializing in representing farmers and landowners before the General Assembly and regulatory agencies. Davis is the son of Ellen Davis and W.R. “Ray” Davis Jr. of Eltham.
Two Providence Forge residents to graduate from John Tyler Community College
Two residents of Providence Forge will graduate from John Tyler Community College this upcoming Friday (May 13) at the college’s Midlothian campus. Michael Doan and Casey Rapalee will be among 1,200 students receiving their degree or certificate as the ceremony kicks off at 6:30 p.m. Doan will be receiving an Associated of Applied Sciences degree in the field of criminal justice. His specialization will focus on homeland security. Casey Rapalee has earned an Associate of Science Degree with a concentration in business administration.
