Quinton resident earns Dean’s List honors from Indiana State

John Lloyd, a resident of Quinton, has earned Dean’s List honors from Indiana State University for the fall semester of 2015. A grade-point average (GPA) of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale is required to be eligible for the list. Lloyd, a freshman, plans to major in professional aviation flight technology.

VECF awards $180,000 grant to Smart Beginnings Greater Richmond division

Virginia Early Childhood Foundation (VECF) awarded Smart Beginnings Greater Richmond, a school readiness initiative that serves localities in the greater Richmond area including Charles City and New Kent, a $180,000 grant. Art exhibition, workshop highlights Art Alive February activities

Arts Alive will present a workshop and an exhibit in the month of February. On Feb. 3, Collage: Creating Energy and Excitement in Your Art workshop will be available. Participants can create collages from tissue paper, brayer acrylics, and more on a variety of mediums. From Feb. 9-Mar. 15, the Participant’s Art from Arts Alive exhibition will be displayed in the Robinson/Olsson Auditorium. On Feb. 27 at 6:30 p.m., The Rock & Roll Jubilee will highlight the exhibit. CCEF announces new officers for 2016

Charles City’s Educational Foundation (CCEF) has announced its new officers for 2016. Jackie Stewart will serve as president of the foundation for the new year. Barbara Winters was elected secretary and Rob Tyler will serve as treasurer during the new term.

CC Health Coalition joins HEAL cities on health movement

Charles City County announced the joining of the county to the Healthy Eating and Active Living (HEAL) cities and town campaigns for the Mid-Atlantic. A November resolution passed by county supervisors allows HEAL to join with Charles City County Health Coalition to carry out the implementation of the adopted resolution. The resolution focuses on improving access to healthy foods and physical activity in both small and large communities throughout Maryland and Virginia. VCU partners with Region 1 schools to form autism consortium

Virginia Commonwealth University’s (VCU) School of Education is partnering with the state’s Region 1 school divisions to establish the Region 1 Autism Education Consortium. The region, including the school districts of Charles City and New Kent, will help serve approximately 2,200 students who identify or exhibit characteristics of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and receive services at the school. Farm Bureau scholarships available in February

Applications for the Charles City-James City-New Kent-York Farm Bureau Scholarship program will be available in February at local high schools and two Farm Bureau locations. The scholarship program is open to all seniors residing in the four counties and seniors whose parents are members of the CC-JC-NK-YK Farm Bureau, regardless of their county of residence. Any student interested in agriculture should apply.
