New Kent’s Relay for Life scheduled for June 29

New Kent County’s Relay for Life event will take place on June 29, 4-10 p.m., at New Kent Middle School. New Kent will join representatives from West Point and King William to have the joint event. The event will honor the late Patricia Paige, who served as the Relay for Life Committee chairwoman for several years. Several local students named to Brightpoint Community College Dean’s List

Several local students were recognized for academic accolades at Brightpoint Community College for the Fall 2023 semester. Morgan Fitzpatrick, Robert Fields, Michelle Fonseca, Cindy Monohan, Lionel Jordan, and Kayla King were all named to the Honors’ List. In order to be named to the Honors’ List, a student must accumulate a grade-point average of 3.5 while taking at least 12 credit hours.

Chickahominy Health District releases CHA report for Charles City

The Chickahominy Health Distict and partner agencies have released the 2023 Charles City County Community Health Assessment (CHA) report. The report details population-level health indicators, identified local strengths, and health priorities for the county. According to the report, the three health priorities in Charles City County were focusing on providing Healthcare Access and Quality, focusing on improving economic stability through increased job opportunities, growth, and resources, and focusing on improved access to health and wellness services and other resources for youth in Charles City County. Snyder named to Dean’s List at Ferrum College

Kerstin Snyder, a 2020 graduate of New Kent High School and current softball player at Ferrum College, has been named to the Dean’s List for the Fall 2023 semester. In order to receive the accolade, a student must accumulate a grade-point average of 3.4 or higher while enrolled as a full-time student.

Bottom of the Bridge LaSertoma offering $2,500 scholarships

Bottom of the Bridge LaSertoma Club is offering two scholarship grants to graduating students of New Kent High School. A $2,500 scholarship will be awarded to a New Kent High School Senior pursuing a college education at either a community college or four-year institution. Another $2,500 will be awarded to a New Kent High School senior enrolled in a technical, nursing, or culinary arts field through Bridging Communities Career and Technical Center. I want to express my reaction to the self-described political comments in the newsletter by John Poindexter in the latest editions of the Chronicle. This is not criticism because I know Mr. Poindexter is a patriot, preservationist, and a gentleman. We share a common background including Vietnam combat and restoring old homes. Mr. Poindexter alleges that during a closed-door meeting of New Kent County’s Board of Supervisors that “pro-growth-oriented members coalesced around their choice for a replacement supervisor” for the sadly departed Ms. Patricia Paige. Quimby named as Next Gen Leader for White House Historical Association

Zach Quimby, a 2016 graduate of New Kent High School, was named to the White House Historical Association (WHHA) as a Next Gen Leader (NGL). Cole Daniels, a resident of Quinton, was named to the Dean’s List at Radford University for the Fall 2023 semester. In order to earn the recognition, a student must accumulate a grade-point average of 3.4 or higher while taking at least 12 semester hours.

Charles City Circuit Court awarded $22,809 preservation grant

The Library of Virginia announced that the Circuit Court Records Preservation (CCRP) program has awarded Charles City Circuit Court Clerk Victoria Washington a grant in the amount of $22,809 for local records preservation. The funds will be used to conserve General Index to Deeds no. 2 1913-1957-Grantees: General Index to Deeds no 2, 1913-1957-Grantors; General Index to Deeds No. 3 1958-1994-Grantors A-K; Land Book 1929-1932; Land Book 1933-1936; and Land Book 1937-1940 stored in her office.
