The bridge at Goddins Mill Pond at Holly Fork Road (Route 600) in the Barhamsville area of New Kent County will close for two months beginning May 9. Virginia’s Department of Transportation (VDOT) will be closing the road to all traffic as they will conduct bridge repairs to the area. Charles City High School’s Solar Team won the State Solar Championship this past weekend. The team of Tia Armstead, Kayla King, and Henry Lotz won the competition held at Virginia State University. The team constructed a solar-powered snowplow that was praised by the judges. The team also received the “People’s Choice Award” from their peers and won a check for $300. The group captured the regional championship in early April at Old Dominion University.
Local organizations can now apply for funding to help promote COVID-19 vaccinations through the Chickahominy Health District. The Chickahominy Health District, that serves both Charles City and New Kent County, has announced that it will provide grant awards for local groups to assist with immunizations for COVID-19. Funding will allow local organizations to increase access, knowledge, and increase the uptake of immunizations. Grant awards will range from $10,000 to $80,000, with funds available from May 1, 2022, to June 30, 2024. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis as funds allow.
