Charles City extends personal property tax deadline to Dec. 15

Charles City’s Board of Supervisors unanimously agreed to extend the deadline for personal property taxes to be paid by ten days. Taxes for the county are now due on Friday, Dec. 15. The decision to extend the date from Dec. 5 was made after citizens voiced concerns to county leaders through phone calls and the public comment period about the late arrival of the tax bills.

Tattling by iPhone imprisons Quinton man for one year

A voice recognition application on a Quinton man’s iPhone has landed him a one-year jail sentence. Jon Matthew Willis, 23, of the 6300 block of Hickory Road, received formal sentencing on one count each of possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and misdemeanor possession of marijuana during Nov. 27 New Kent Circuit Court proceedings. Update: Two injured on Route 60 in afternoon accident

A Thanksgiving afternoon accident has resulted in one person being transported by helicopter to a local medical facility. Virginia State Police said shortly before 3 p.m., two individuals were pushing a disabled 1991 Ford Explorer with another steering the car on Route 60 (Pocahontas Trail) in New Kent around the 9000 block when it was struck by a 2012 Honda Civic from the rear. The two individuals pushing the vehicle sustained serious injuries, with one being transported by helicopter and the other by ambulance. The individual steering the disabled car was not injured. Loan of $28 million for new school among recommendations in New Kent’s Capital Improvement Plan

A loan for the construction of a New Elementary School accounts for the majority of funds to be used as part of a 2018-19 fiscal year Capital Improvement Plan proposal for New Kent County. County administrator Rodney Hathaway proposed a recommended CIP totaling $31 million to the county’s planning commission at Monday night’s meeting. Of that amount, approximately $28 million will be a loan for the construction of a New Kent Elementary School. A New Kent grand jury certified indictments against a dozen defendants as part of Nov. 20 circuit court proceedings: –Eric Wayne Bassett, 51, of the 8200 block of Courthouse Road, Providence Forge, on one charge each of shoplifting (second or subsequent offense) and possession of cocaine. The defendant allegedly changed the price on an item at the ABC store on Sept. 4. Man attempting to assist police ends up guilty on drug possession charge

A Quinton man who attempted to assist authorities with a drug bust now faces possible jail time after being convicted on a possession of heroin charge. Samuel Patrick Nye, 34, of the 6400 block of Hickory Road, was convicted during Monday morning’s contested trial in New Kent Circuit Court. On Apr. 5 of this year, Nye had agreed to work with police to set up a drug buy with a target in Mechanicsville. Nye met with Cpt. J. Joseph McLaughlin III to go over the details of the buy. A Richmond man was apprehended after a high speed chase in New Kent along Interstate 64 during the early morning hours on Nov. 18. Two men in unrelated cases have each been indicted on rape charges by a Charles City grand jury. Cordell Lamar Jones, 19, of the 3700 block of Lafayette Street, Hopewell, was indicted on one count of rape of a victim under the age of 13 during Nov. 14 proceedings in Charles City Circuit Court. The indictment alleges that on Aug. 28, Jones committed the crime after encountering the victim on the Virginia Capital Trail bike path. Charles City man to serve two years in jail for stealing boat motors

A Charles City man who stole boat motors and intended to sell them will serve two years in jail. Dallis Leno Wallace Jr., 49, of the 7800 block of Lewis Tyler Lane, received formal sentencing during Nov. 14 proceedings in Charles City Circuit Court. As Wallace’s contested trial in September, Commonwealth’s Attorney Rob Tyler presented evidence that Wallace stole boat engines last April from Christian Hager. Wallace attempted to sell the motors to John Hoffmeyer, who notified the police of suspicious activity when he noticed the cables on the motors were cut. A Quinton man will serve three months in jail after receiving his formal sentence as part of Nov. 13 proceedings in New Kent Circuit Court. Richard Ivan Texler Jr., 58, learned his fate on a reduced charge of misdemeanor assault and battery on a family member that stemmed from a Dec. 9, 2016 incident. During a Sept. 25 contested trial, evidence revolved around Texler finding electronic cigarettes that belonged to the victim in his home.
