Bagby, Peace retain delegate seats
Lamont Bagby and Chris Peace have both retained their respective seats in the Virginia House of Delegates following Tuesday night’s general election. In the race for the 97th District seat that represents New Kent County, Chris Peace easily outdistanced himself from challenger Cori Johnson by a total vote of 24,342-9,314. In New Kent, Peace received 6,007 votes for nearly 71 percent of the ballots cast. By contrast, Johnson received 2,460 votes, or 29 percent, from county citizens. New Kent schools’ proposed CIP carries $1.1 million tag
The construction of a high school stadium concession stand and storage area is part of recommended Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) for the 2018-19 fiscal year for New Kent County schools. School leaders approved the nearly $1.1 million in proposed projects during the Nov. 6 regular monthly board meeting. Superintendent of schools Dave Myers addressed board members of the possibility to replace the concession stand and an adjacent storage facility during the October regular meeting. Update: Railroad crossings set for closure in New Kent
After conversations with New Kent Sheriff’s Office and VDOT, CSX rail has revised details in regards to repairs at crossings in New Kent. Nov. 9: South Waterside Drive at Riverside Drive- CSX personnel will not start work until after school buses have departed for the schools and will be completed prior to the arrival of the school buses in the afternoon. CSX stated that there will be message boards in place to indicate detours for the location. Update: New Kent Sheriff’s Office locate missing teen
Update: Carl was located Wednesday morning. New Kent Sheriff’s Office is asking for any information to locate a missing Quinton teenager. Zachary Ty Carl, 14, was last seen on Oct. 30 at 9:30 p.m. He is 5’10” and weighs approximately 145 pounds. He has brown hair and hazel colored eyes. He is currently in need of medication. Carl is possibly driving a 2015 white Fiat with Virginia license plate number 5912BE. If you have any information, contact New Kent Sheriff’s Office at 966-9500.
Route 155 to close on November 9
Courthouse Road (Route 155) at the border of Charles City and New Kent will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 9, from 9-11 a.m. The road will be shut down as a bridge will be dedicated in honor of former New Kent County Sheriff F. W. “Wakie” Howard Jr. for more than 40 years of service. The bridge was chosen in retrospect to Howard’s upbringing in Charles City County and his role as sheriff in New Kent. Providence Forge man admits guilt to stealing lawnmower
A Providence Forge man who stole a lawnmower entered into a plea agreement as part of Oct. 27 proceedings in Charles City Circuit Court. Anthony David English, 24, of the 11000 block of Greenyard Estates, pled guilty to a single count of grand larceny. One charge of intent to sell stolen property was dropped as part of the agreement. In a summary of evidence provided by Commonwealth’s Attorney Rob Tyler, on Mar. 3, a Craft riding lawnmower belonging to Ed Branch was confiscated from his front yard. Third phase renovations for New Kent Historic School proposed to supervisors
New Kent’s Board of Supervisors received their first look at a proposal for the next upgrades and changes for New Kent’s Historical School. Hopke and Associates representative John Hopke presented a concept design plan to county leaders as part of Wednesday (Oct. 25) morning’s monthly work session for the renovation of the west wing of the Historic School. The renovation will be the third for the Historic School as part of its preservation and conversion since 2010. Two crimes in four days puts Mechanicsville man in jail for six months
A Mechanicsville man who committed two separate crimes over a four-day span will spend the next six months in jail after accepting a plea deal during Oct. 23 proceedings in New Kent Circuit Court. Landry Bailey, 23, of the 8700 block of Elliott Drive, entered guilty pleas to one count each of grand larceny and possession of a controlled substance (heroin). Amendment request garners opposition, NKPC deferral
An amendment that would allow additional uses at Rock Creek Villas in Bottoms Bridge will have to wait at least two months before receiving a recommendation from New Kent’s Planning Commission. An Oct. 16 Monday night meeting saw the project hit a wall after some residents voiced opposition based on past experiences. Waterview man sentenced to 30-month prison term in New Kent Circuit Court
A Waterview man will spend the next two-and-a-half years in prison after receiving formal sentencing during Oct. 16 proceedings in New Kent Circuit Court. Zachary Widmark, 21, of 85 Parrots Creek Lane, received a five-year sentence with all but two years suspended on a charge of possession of a firearm while in possession of a controlled substance (LSD).
