Snowstorm accounts for at least one death in Charles City

Snowstorm Jonas that hit the east coast on Jan. 22-23 has accounted for a death in Charles City. Charles City Sheriff’s Office confirmed the death of a man on Jan. 23. A medical examiner said the man suffered from hypothermia as a result of the conditions. The name of the victim is being withheld upon notification of kin.

Closings and postponements for Jan. 25, 2016

Charles City County Schools are closed Monday, Jan. 25, 2016. Friday, Jan. 29, 2016 (which was originally a teacher workday) will be used as a make-up day. New Kent County Schools are closed Monday, Jan. 25, 2016. New Kent School Board’s work session scheduled for Monday, Jan. 25, 2016, 8:30 a.m. has been moved to Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2016, 8:15 a.m.

Treacherous roads cause numerous crashes in area

With more than six inches of snow falling and a combination mixture of sleet and snow in the forecast for Saturday, Virginia State Police continue to urge motorists to stay off the road as VDOT continues to work around the clock. According to Sgt. Stephan Vick of the Virginia State Police, more than 300 crashes and 251 calls for disabled vehicles in central Virginia. Approximately 30 of those accidents have been reported from New Kent, Charles City, King William, and King & Queen Counties.

State trooper hit in New Kent

A Virginia State Trooper was hit in New Kent while assisting a disabled vehicle on Interstate 64. According to a press release, around 7:30 p.m., Trooper M.D. Jester was helping a stranded motorist at mile marker 212 near the Talleysville exit when a car ran in the back of his police cruiser. Jester was taken to a nearby medical facility and treated for minor injuries.

The boys basketball game between Charles City and New Kent originally scheduled for Jan. 23 has been moved to Jan. 30. Charles City County Government offices are closed tomorrow, Jan. 22, 2016. Bridge projects in Charles City postponed due to projected inclement weather

Two projects involving bridges in Charles City County have been postponed due to projected inclement weather. The Herring Creek Bridge on Route 5 (John Tyler Memorial Highway) in Charles City was originally scheduled to be closed Jan. 21-22 for concrete to be poured onto the deck. Virginia’s Department of Transportation (VDOT) has delayed that project until Tuesday, Jan. 26. Starting on that Tuesday at 9 a.m., the bridge will be closed to all traffic as concrete will be poured onto the deck. Charles City schools’ CIP registers $1.1 million price tag

Charles City superintendent of schools David Gaston revealed his proposed Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) to the school board during Tuesday’s night regular meeting. Projects for FY2016-17 produced a price tag of $1,082,465 of recommendations. That figure is up $102,993 from the original approved number of $979,472 in last year’s approved CIP. Herring Creek Bridge to close in Charles City, Benjamin Harrison Bridge’s postponed

The Herring Creek Bridge on Route 5 (John Tyler Memorial Highway) in Charles City will be closed next week. Starting Thursday, Jan. 21 at 9 a.m., the bridge will be closed to all traffic as concrete will be poured onto the deck. The bridge will remained closed until 7 a.m. on Jan. 22 to allow the concrete to sit. Federal authorities take over New Kent armed carjacking case

Federal authorities are now taking over a case involving four men who were involved in an armed carjacking in November. Charges were dropped at the local level against Anthony Tyrone Williams Jr. 21, of the 23000 block of Cutbank Road, McKinney; Colin Ray Dugger, 21, of the 2500 block of Shady Side Drive, Petersburg; David Dewayne Jackson, 24, of the 25000 block of Shady Side Drive, Petersburg; and Javanta Lightfoot, 21, of the 15000 block of Allen Road, Dinwiddie.
