Drug take back initiative in New Kent scheduled for Sept. 26
New Kent Sheriff’s Office will conduct its annual National Prescription Drug Take Back Initiative on Saturday, Sept. 26, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Teaming with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the sheriff’s office will provide citizens another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by disposing their homes of potentially dangerous, expired, unused, or unwanted prescription drugs. Drop off location will be New Kent Sheriff’s office. The service is free and anonymous. No syringes or sharp objects will be accepted for disposal. One arrested for possession of cocaine in New Kent
A Toano woman has been arrested on an outstanding warrant in New Kent for possessing a controlled substance in New Kent. Sibylla H. Coles, 43, of the 7200 block of Little Creek Dam Road, was taken into custody on Sept. 11 and is charged with one count of possession of cocaine. According to the arrest report, New Kent authorities have been looking for her since the offense occurred on Mar. 25 of this year in relation to an alleged offense near Plum Point Road. Multi-county burglary ring men to serve more time in jail after New Kent convictions
Three men involved in a rash of burglaries in multiple jurisdictions accepted plea deals during Sept. 14 proceedings in New Kent Circuit Court. William Lawrence Paige, 52, of the 1300 block of Burma Court, Richmond; Benjamin Potter, 37, of the 9300 block of Horsecastle Court Road, Glen Allen; and James Tracy Thomas, 51, of the 3300 block of Meadowbridge Road, made their pleas during their Monday morning court appearances. New Kent teenager dies in car accident
A New Kent teenager is dead after a fatal accident during the early morning hours of Sept. 13. Joshua R. Perry, 16, died at the scene of the accident according to the Virginia State police report. At 1:12 a.m., a single vehicle crashed on Tunstall Road about half a mile south of Old Church Road. The 2011 Ford Fiesta was traveling north on Tunstall Road when it ran off the right side of the road, struck an embankment, went airborne for about 30 yards, striking a tree which spun the car sideways, hitting a second tree and overturning. Driver killed overnight in New Kent
A motorist is dead after a fatal accident in the early morning hours of New Kent. Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Stephan Vick said around 1:05 a.m. on Sept. 13, a vehicle crashed at the intersection of Old Church Road and Tunstall Road. The vehicle was the only one involved in the accident. No further details are available at this time. An update is expected later on this morning.
New Kent school board approves tennis courts contract, heads to county supervisors
New Kent school board members unanimously agreed to enter into a contract with Tennis Courts Inc. for the construction of a tennis court facility for the high school. After a March outcry from citizens about the conditions of the courts that prevented any home matches for the high school team, school board members looked to resolve the problem through discussions that included cost and moving the courts. A Charles City man who abducted a Philadelphia woman off the streets in a case that made national headlines, entered a guilty plea during Sept. 10 United States District court proceedings and will spend the next 35 years in a federal penitentiary. Delvin Barnes, 37, pleaded guilty to the abduction of Carlesha Freeland-Gaither, 22, in Philadelphia, Pa. during the federal case held in Philadelphia. Candidate for Charles City Sheriff arrested, indicted on six felony charges
A Town of West Point man who declared his candidacy in the race for sheriff in Charles City County has turned himself in and was indicted on six felony charges related to activities involving submitting election materials for his campaign. Indictments unsealed Wednesday afternoon were served on Vance R. Richards, 46. Written accusations allege that Richards submitted an address that was repeated on six different forms on the June 5 deadline when declaring for candidacy to run for sheriff in Charles City. The passing of George Oscar Allen Jr., a Lanexa businessman, shocked the New Kent community last year. Porter elevated to acting principal at Charles City Elementary School
Angela Porter has been appointed as acting principal of Charles City Elementary school after the resignation of former principal Latonia Anderson. Anderson resigned effective Sept. 4 to assume new duties in Petersburg Public Schools as coordinator of professional development and curriculum.
