Three-year old New Kent boy dies from rare disease
A three-year old New Kent County boy has died from a rare disease. Riley Crowell passed away from Meningitis on Aug. 12. Information of Riley’s death was released by the Chickahominy Health District that serves both New Kent and Charles City counties after a local day care center reported the information to the organization. Meningitis affects about 1,000 people a year in the United States. The bacteria causes membranes covering the brain and spinal cord to become inflamed which could result in death, brain damage, and paralysis. SOL scores exceed state average in New Kent; Charles City scores perfect passing rate in four categories
New Kent County public schools Standards of Learning (SOL) test scores surpassed the state average while Charles City County public schools achieved perfect pass rates in four categories as data from the 2014-15 school year was released on Aug. 10. In New Kent, all 29 areas topped the 70 percentile pass rate, with 26 of those areas eclipsing the 80-point achievement barrier. Top areas of scoring include a 97 percent achievement rate in the subject of geography and a pass rate of 94 percent in Algebra I. Two arrested by New Kent Sheriff’s Office
New Kent Sheriff’s Office arrested two individuals for unrelated crimes according to an Aug. 11 press release. –Rebecca M. English, 28, of the 11400 block of Greenyard Estates Way, Providence Forge, on one charge of grand larceny. According to the report, a wallet was accidently left by a customer at the Family Dollar in Providence Forge. Store management conducted an investigation and turned the information over to a New Kent deputy. English allegedly stole more than $200 from the wallet according to the warrant. No action on water-ski ordinance in New Kent, more research to be conducted
Debate over an ordinance that prevents water-skiing on Chickahominy Lake will be subjected to a lot of research, according to New Kent supervisors. What started in July as an inquiry by Jonathan Edmonds and Daniel Moore on why the recreational activity could not be performed on New Kent’s portion of the lake has become a difficult issue to tackle by county leaders. Construction of Quinton roundabout to resume by September
A project to improve a dangerous intersection in New Kent will resume by September. But even with proposed construction of the roundabout, at least one county supervisor is disappointed by the handling of the situation. District 1 supervisor Thomas Evelyn expressed displeasure over a lack of communication with Virginia’s Department of Transportation (VDOT) during the Aug. 10 New Kent Board of Supervisors meeting. VDOT projects to occupy overnight hours on Interstate 64 in New Kent
Several Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) projects are scheduled to undergo maintenance this week in both directions on Interstate 64 in New Kent during overnight hours. Aug. 9- Interstate 64 eastbound between mile marker 213 and mile marker 216 will have the right lane closed from 10 p.m.-6 a.m. for paving. Broadband initiative in Charles City targets October completion date
Progress of improved telecommunications in Charles City is on task for an October completion. County planning director Matt Rowe updated county supervisors at the July 28 regular board meeting. After receiving a $600,000 state grant in December 2014, negotiations, pre-engineering work, and planning have hit full stride. Construction is slated to begin to install fiber optic lines to Roxbury Industrial Park by late August on early September according to Rowe. New Kent water-skiing ordinance’s history may affect future decision on issue
During the July 7 regular meeting of the New Kent Board of Supervisors, two citizens asked county leaders to consider changing a 30-year ordinance that prohibits water-skiing on Chickahominy Lake. Two men accept plea deals in New Kent Circuit Court
Two men involved in separate cases accepted plea deals as part of July 27 morning proceedings in New Kent Circuit Court. –Nicholas Warren Bryant, 20, of the 200 block of Buckroe Road, Hampton, entered a guilty plea to one count of obtaining money by false pretenses. One charge of conspiracy to obtain money by false pretenses was dropped. In a summary of evidence, on Dec. 13, 2014, Bryant and Shalia Marie Brown, a co-defendant, went to Gold and Silver Mine in Quinton and pawned stolen jewelry, receiving $3,000 from the transaction.
