VDH recommends denial of medical facility in New Kent
With expansion continuing in the Bottoms Bridge area of New Kent County, efforts are under way to bring in a Level 2 Trauma Center to provide citizens and neighboring counties healthcare and additional services. But for the moment, the concept has hit a roadblock after a review by the Virginia Department of Health (VDH). An initial application to VDH for the construction of the facility returned unfavorable reviews during an early August meeting. Hampton man arrested after evading NK authorities for more than a year
A Hampton man who has eluded New Kent authorities for a year has been arrested. Michael Anthony Little, 40, of the 1400 block of E. Pembroke Avenue, was taken into custody by sheriff deputies on Aug. 17. According to the arrest report, Little had allegedly used a vehicle without permission of the owner on June 18, 2014. As authorities searched for him, Little evaded custody and remained on the run. Deputies located the suspected and arrested him on an outstanding warrant. Little was being held without bond pending a September appearance in general district court.
NKSO seeks information on burglaries
New Kent Sheriff’s Office is asking for information on two unrelated burglaries in the county. On Aug. 1, deputies responded to a burglary that took place at Rick’s Deli on New Kent Highway. According to the police report, the front window was broken out and Virginia Lottery scratch tickets were stolen. Video surveillence shows an unknown black female (above) who is suspected of the theft and other similar crimes in the Richmond area as well as Southampton and Isle of Wight counties. Driver killed on Route 60 in Providence Forge
A Providence Forge man is dead after a single-vehicle accident on Route 60 near Adkins Road in Providence Forge. Howard “J.T.” Taylor III, 54, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. According to a Virginia State Police press release, Taylor was traveling eastbound on Route 60 just before 3 p.m. when the vehicle ran off the side of the road and struck a tree. Cause of the accident remains under investigation. Virginia State Police say he was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.
Delays on Eltham Bridge, Interstate 64 next week in New Kent
Motorists traveling between New Kent to West Point will experience delays next week in Eltham. Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will inspect the Eltham Bridge from Aug. 24-28. Alternating lane closures will occur between 9 a.m.-3 p.m. In other VDOT activities in New Kent, paving will close down lanes on eastbound Interstate 64 during the overnight hours. On Aug. 23, the right lane between mile marker 221 and 223 will be closed from 10 p.m.-6 a.m. for paving activities. Three injured in Aug. 18 morning accident in New Kent
Three people were injured in an Aug. 18 morning accident in New Kent after a vehicle ran off the road and struck a tree. According to Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Steve Vick, shortly after 10 a.m. a 2013 Chevrolet Impala ran off the road traveling westbound Interstate 64 at exit 220 (West Point). The male driver and female passenger were transported to a local medical facility with serious injuries. A third passenger, a small child, was also transported to the same facility with non-life threatening injuries. Cause of the crash is under investigation with possible charges pending.
New Kent Sheriff’s Office warns of donation scam
New Kent Sheriff’s Office is warning citizens of a scam that is making its rounds in the county. According to a press release sent by New Kent Chief Deputy J. Joseph McLaughlin Jr., the scammers identify themselves as representatives of the Virginia Sheriff’s Association. The caller solicits funds and says the money will be used to assist children and/or spouses of deputies that have been killed in the line of duty and the funds would be used to provide training. Man booked on felony charges after trespassing on parents’ property
A Richmond man has been arrested on several felony charges after allegedly trespassing on property in New Kent. Mason A. Hudson, 23, of the 7600 block of Cheshire Road, was arrested on Aug. 14 after he was caught allegedly trespassing upon his parents’ property on Outpost Road. After being arrested, the suspect was searched and heroin was found in his possession along with personal checks that he allegedly forged. Hudson is charged with two counts of forgery, and one count each of possession of heroin and misdemeanor trespassing. He was being held on $10,000 secured bond.
More time handed to men involved in multi-county burglaries
A second jurisdiction has handed two men involved in burglaries in multiple counties additional jail time after each accepted a plea deal. William Lawrence Paige, 52, of the 1300 block of Burma Court Road, Richmond, and Benjamin Potter, 37, of the 9300 block of Horsecastle Court Road, Glen Allen, elected to accept plea agreements during Aug. 14 proceedings in Charles City Circuit Court. Paige entered a guilty plea to one count of grand larceny, with one additional count of grand larceny and one count of intent to sell stolen property dropped. Iowa kidnappers arrested in New Kent receive 40-year sentences in federal court
Two Iowa residents who were involved in a kidnapping case that resulted in their arrest in New Kent learned their fate during federal court proceedings in Richmond on Aug. 14. Aldair Hodza, 36, and Laura Evelene Sorenson, 31, will both serve at least 40 years in federal prison after a ruling was rendered by U.S. District Judge Henry Hudson.
