Community unites after New Kent teenager dies on basketball court
Maurice Bey, a rising sophomore at New Kent High School, died on July 15 shortly after a routine pick-up basketball game at Quinton Park. The 15-year old teenager was resting between games around 7 p.m. that evening. Witnesses said that Bey began to have trouble breathing and paramedics responded to the scene. Emergency crews performed CPR before he was taken to a local medical facility where he was pronounced dead. Bey’s death becomes the latest in a list of tragedies involving youth in the county of New Kent. Over the last three years, six students enrolled in New Kent schools…

A teenage boy is dead after collapsing at Quinton Park in New Kent yesterday afternoon (July 15). Details are limited at this time, but preliminary reports say that 15-year old Maurice Bey was engaged in a game of basketball before passing out. Witnesses report medics responded to the scene and performed CPR after receiving an emergency call to the park. Resuscitation efforts could not revive him and he was pronounced dead shortly afterwards. Assault during home invasion leads to arrests in New Kent
New Kent Sheriff’s Office has arrested three individuals who allegedly assaulted a juvenile while allegedly burglarizing a home in the county. Comfort L. Goody, 18, and Bonnie S. Venable, 28, both of the 5100 block of Hemlock Road, Quinton, and Ahmad A. Hutchins, 19, of the 9800 block of Tunstall Road, New Kent, were arrested on July 7 after the trio allegedly burglarized a home in the 6300 block of Lakeshore Drive. Contributions made to the country of Liberia by former Charles City missionary Lott Cary nearly 200 years ago continue to impact the nation today. And on July 11, more than 30 alumni from a school that resulted in his work celebrated in Charles City. Overnight guardrail repairs to slow westbound traffic on Interstate 64
Overnight repairs to guardrails will slow traffic on Interstate 64 westbound from July 13-16. Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews will be working from 9 p.m.-5 a.m. to fix guardrails on both sides of the westbound highway. Closings are as followed: –The left lane will be closed between mile markers 219 and 220 (West Point) on July 13-14. –The right lane will be closed at mile marker 214 (Providence Forge) on July 15-16. –The left lane will be closed between mile markers 222 and 223 on July 15-16.
Multi-county burglary ring duo indicted in Charles City
Two men who were involved in a multi-county burglary ring that terrorized four jurisdictions have now received indictments for crimes allegedly committed in Charles City. A grand jury returned true bills of indictment on William Lawrence Paige, 52, of the 1300 block of Burma Court, Richmond, and Benjamin Lee Potter, 37, of the 9000 block of Horse Castle Court, Glen Allen, during Tuesday morning Charles City Circuit Court proceedings. New Kent Historic School to become home of Rappahannock Community College satellite campus
In March 2013, New Kent supervisors voted to renovate the Historic School in hopes of converting it into an elementary school for the county. But with major snags in 2014 that included Marengo Management electing not to continue the second phase of the renovation project and eliminating the notion of a third elementary school, the building has sat vacant for nearly a year. A proposed set of regulations aimed at governing the appearance of development along the main arterial highways (New Kent Highway and Pocahontas Trail) in the Bottoms Bridge area of New Kent has been approved by county supervisors. Monday evening’s decision comes after a one-month reflection period to address areas of concern from county supervisors. Construction of roundabout in New Kent halted due to contract dispute
A project to improve a dangerous intersection in New Kent has hit a major snag. And it may be a while before it can be unraveled. Construction of a roundabout at the intersection of New Kent Highway (Route 249) and Tunstall/Airport Road (Route 612) has been idle for the last three months. Half of the $2.7 million VDOT project had occurred in April, when the contractor pulled out of the contract. Old ordinance impacting recreational activity, says New Kent residents
An ordinance that has been unchanged for several years has caused two New Kent citizens to voice their displeasure about one particular recreational activity not allowed on Chickahominy Lake.
