Two in Brickshire car thefts receive plea deals in New Kent Circuit Court
Two men involved in thefts from a number of vehicles in the Brickshire subdivision of New Kent accepted plea deals during Monday afternoon New Kent Circuit Court proceedings. Aaron Scott Lee, 21, of the 3100 block of Chickahominy Road, Toano, and Terrance Terrell White, 21, of the 3000 block of N. Riverside Drive, Lanexa, accepted terms of the plea agreement, with White entering an Alford plea of guilt (meaning he maintains his innocence but stipulates evidence presented is enough to convict him) and Lee entering a straight guilty plea. Fuhrmann throws name in for reelection to Charles City School Board
Steve Fuhrmann has announced his reelection campaign as an at-large candidate for Charles City’s School Board. “It has been an honor to serve the interests of our citizens as a county-wide school board representative,” said Fuhrmann in a press release. “I will continue to encourage the momentum for positive improvements that are underway in our school system and urge an even greater expenditure focus on students learning and teachers teaching.” Fuhrmann received a Doctorate in Education from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and has resided in Charles City for over three decades with his wife, Louise Hudgins.
Crump campaigning for New Kent Circuit Court Clerk
New Kent resident and current circuit court employee Amy P. Crump has announced her candidacy for the position of New Kent Circuit Court clerk. Crump has spent the last 17 years working in the court system. She currently serves as the circuit court deputy clerk and previous held the position of circuit court judicial assistant. Crump credits her vast experience in the court system and custom service opportunities as the main reason she is vying for the circuit court clerk position. “I look forward to continuing to assist the citizens of New Kent County,” Crump said in a press release….

Update: Single vehicle accident on Interstate 64 claims life
One person is dead after an Apr. 22 accident on Interstate 64 in New Kent. Virginia State Police spokesman Steve Vick said shortly before 8 p.m. near exit 220 (West Point), a 2005 Freightliner tractor-trailer was traveling westbound on Interstate 64 when it ran off the left side of the road and struck a tree. The truck partially overturned, spilling fuel and partially blocking the left lane. The driver was the lone occupant of the vehicle and died at the scene. He was wearing a seatbelt at the time. Charles City School Board looks to revamp salary scale
With one of the main focuses for FY2015-16 to provide employees a raise, Charles City School Board members heard options on how to address the long-standing problem of compression during an Apr. 21 meeting. Interim finance director Sheila Minor’s presentation focused on the inconsistency of the school system’s pay scale for teachers. She said the unbalanced steps and the ability to compensate employees for years of service may be a factor why teachers choose to leave the county’s school system or not come to it at all. A proposed set of regulations aimed at governing the appearance of development along main arterial highways (New Kent Highway and Pocahontas Trail) in the Bottoms Bridge area of New Kent is headed for public hearing next month before the county’s Planning Commission. Commission members, meanwhile, have forwarded proposed county law revisions pertaining to land located in floodplains to the county’s Board of Supervisors along with a recommendation to adopt the measures. Pros, cons weighed in New Kent tennis court talks
New Kent School Board members continued to ponder solutions to address the need for new tennis courts at an Apr. 20 work session. Needless to say, the decision is becoming tougher with members hoping to have a viable choice before the next fiscal year. New Kent Planning Commission chairman Michael B. Lane Sr. stunned fellow commission members by announcing his resignation during the group’s Monday night meeting. Lane, who represents District 2, said his resignation is effective immediately. He has served on the commission for the past seven years.
