Fire injures one at home in New Kent
An early Wednesday morning fire has injured one person in New Kent. A mobile home became engulfed in flames at the 1300 block of Dispatch Road around 5 a.m. Five individuals were inside the home during the start of fire. Upon arrival, units found the structure in flames and confirmed all occupants had escaped the home. One occupant sustained a minor injury exiting the home. That individual was treated at the site by emergency staff. Two adults and three children were displaced by the fire and are receiving assistance from the Red Cross. When Donald Charity discovered junked trucks from his property were missing on Jan. 27, 2012, he scavenged the land to find any type of clue to how they disappeared. What the victim found was a torn check, which eventually would lead to guilty convictions for his cousin. Lanexa men arrested after alleged altercation lead to injuries
A pair of Lanexa men have been arrested on one count each of malicious wounding after a verbal confrontation escalated to a physical altercation. Charles Edward Laxton III, 34, of the 13000 block of Old Telegraph Road, and Clayton Garcia Roberts, 51, of the 100 block of Selby Lane, were taken into custody on Aug. 21 for the incident. A Petersburg man, whose motorcycle joyride turned into a high speed chase, has entered no contest pleas to one count each of felony eluding police and misdemeanor reckless driving. Perry N. Sutton, 24, of the 200 block of N. Sycamore Street, Apt. 25, acknowledged his actions during Aug. 25 New Kent Circuit Court proceedings. Williamsburg woman, part of shoplifting duo, convicted in New Kent Circuit Court
A Williamsburg woman who was part of a shoplifting duo has been found guilty on two charges during Aug. 25 New Kent Circuit Court proceedings. Courtney Lee Stephenson, 27, of the 100 block of Winter East Road, was convicted on one charge each of grand larceny and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. One charge of possession of cocaine was dismissed. Volunteer assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Brenton J. Peter Murray Johns, 69, passed away on Aug. 19, leaving behind an influential legacy in New Kent. Bridge inspections at NK, CC border; overnight paving on Interstate 64 east
Route 155 (Courthouse Road) will have alternating lane closures from Aug. 25-29 between Route 60 (Pocahontas Trail) and the Charles City County line for bridge inspections. Closures will occur between 9 a.m.-3 p.m. to as part of VDOT’s biannual inspections of the bridge. Delays are expected during this time due to the lane closures. In other VDOT repairs, Interstate 64 eastbound will continue to undergo overnight paving and pothole patching. A man who stole a dump truck and rammed it into a fence has accepted a deal in Charles City Circuit Court. Terrell Wesley Williams, 21, of the 4500 block of Barnetts Road, Charles City, accepted the terms during Aug. 22 court proceedings. A wanted murder suspect from Richmond has been arrested in Charles City. Logan Miles, 19, of the 2100 block of Allwood Avenue, was apprehended on Aug. 17 after authorities received a tip that he was in the vicinity. Charles City Sheriff’s deputies located Miles at a party and he was arrested without incident. Miles, who once resided in Charles City, is a suspect in the murder of Lorenzo Harris at the Newbridge Apartments in Richmond. Charles City schools’ test scores up, superintendent says
Charles City superintendent of schools David Gaston delivered some positive news to school board members and hopes to continue the trend under his tenure. Gaston announced at the Aug. 19 regular school board meeting that preliminary Standards of Learning (SOL) results indicate that Charles City Elementary and Charles City High School will be fully accredited schools.
