CIP, accelerated math course among new NK superintendent’s goals
New superintendent of New Kent schools David Myers didn’t waste any time addressing school board members during the board’s Aug. 18 work session on issues he’d like to see emphasized to enhance education. Myers began with capital improvement plan (CIP) steps to improve the schools. New dates announced for closure of Benjamin Harrison Bridge
Virginia’s Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced new dates for the closure of the Benjamin Harrison Bridge connecting Charles City and Prince George County to replace the bridge’s auxiliary drive. The bridge’s first closing will be Aug. 18-22. It will close once again Sept. 8-12. Motorists are advised to take Route 5 westbound from Charles City to Interstate 295 southbound as an alternative route. Drivers may exit onto Route 10 eastbound (exit 13A) to return to Prince George. New Kent supervisors vote to send letter opposing DEQ permit for Synagro
When a person is looking for information on a specific item, they usually go see an expert. For New Kent supervisors, their knowledgeable person is District 5 representative Ray Davis. After receiving input from Davis, supervisors unanimously voted 5-0 to send a letter to Virginia’s State Water Control Board opposing the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and its consideration to issue a permit to Synagro to dump industrial waste in the county. PF men arrested for threats to burn down house
Two Providence Forge men have each been charged with one count of making threats after an Aug. 8 incident. Carlos Adrian Lopez-Cardona, 42, and Jose Rodolfo Lopez-Cardona, 43, both of the 10000 block of White Dogwood Drive, were arrested for making threats to burn an occupied dwelling. Each of the men had an outstanding warrant, leading to a New Kent Sheriff’s Office deputy placing them in custody. Both were being held without bond.
NKSO seeks leads for vehicle break-ins in Brickshire subdivision
New Kent Sheriff’s Office is seeking information relating to vehicle break-ins in the Brickshire subdivision in the county. From Aug. 7 to Aug. 8, several vehicles in the area were tampered and rummaged through during overnight hours, with several items being removed. As of now, sheriff’s deputies have not received any leads. Repairs to delay traffic at intersection of Airport Road, New Kent Highway until 2015
Utility and road construction are now underway at the intersection of Route 249 (New Kent Highway) and Route 612 (Airport Road and Tunstall Road) in the Quinton area of New Kent. The adjustments are being made to address both drainage and traffic issues at the intersection. The construction will cause at least one lane to be closed for most of the day. Construction is expected to last until March 2015. Motorists are encouraged to use an alternative route and avoid the area as much as possible.
Former Quinton Fire and EMS treasurer accepts reduced embezzlement charges
A former Quinton Volunteer Fire and EMS Inc. (Company 2) treasurer accepted a plea deal to reduced embezzlement charges during Aug. 11 New Kent Circuit Court proceedings. Lucinda Marciniak Crump, 48, of the 9000 block of Essex Hills Road, New Kent, entered guilty pleas to three counts of misdemeanor embezzlement. Those charges were originally felony embezzlement indictments. In a summary of evidence, Crump volunteered for Quinton Fire and EMS for the last seven years, serving the last three as the company’s treasurer. NKSO seek information on garage break-ins
New Kent Sheriff’s Office is looking for information regarding thefts from tool sheds and garages in the Deer Lake subdivision near Tunstall Road. According to an incident report, garages and sheds have been ransacked with tools and other items taken. The thefts allegedly occurred over a two-week period at the end of July. If you have seen a suspicious vehicle or have any information regarding the thefts, please call New Kent Sheriff’s Office at 966-9500 or Crime Stoppers at 780-1000.
Cantor to resign from position in U.S. Congress on Aug. 18
Eric Cantor, the current New Kent representative in the United States Congress, will be stepping down from his position effective Aug. 18. The decision came through an Aug. 1 press release through his office. “It has been the highest honor of my professional life to serve the people of Virginia’s 7th District in Congress,” he said. “During this time of transition for me and my family, it is my foremost desire to ensure that representation is maintained for the people of the 7th District.” Cantor expects Governor Terry McAuliffe to use Election Day in November to fill the vacancy immediately.
New Kent man arrested on child pornography charges
A New Kent County man faces 10 counts of child pornography possession along with two distribution charges after law enforcement officials executed a search warrant at the suspect’s residence on Aug. 8. The arrest of Forrest Blake Jones, 21, of the 7000 block of Lakeshore Drive, Quinton, follows a two month-long investigation conducted by the Southern Virginia Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.
