Historic School no longer in play as third elementary
New Kent’s Historic School is no longer considered a viable option for a third elementary school. After Marengo Management, the original contractor for the second phase of project, submitted a letter to withdraw on Apr. 28, New Kent supervisors were tasked to find an alternative for the building. Charles City School Board to ponder cuts at future work session; receives relief on current budget
Charles City’s School Board elected not to approve a final budget at its May 20 work session after receiving a list of cuts to help save a guidance counselor position at the middle school. With District 2 representative Barbara Crawley and District 3 representative Martha Harris absent, school board members expressed concern on the impact of the decision without the other members’ input. Superintendent of schools Janet Crawley was tasked with finding $60,000 for the position after board members voiced concern at a May 14 work session. Grading scale, longer school day gets go-ahead from New Kent school board
New Kent County School Board members followed through on recommendations made by director of curriculum Nate Collins and implemented both a longer school day and 10-point grading scale for next year. Members approved both actions at their May 19 work session after hearing preliminary discussions at the regular May meeting. New Kent supervisors approve $64.8 million 2014-15 budget
New Kent supervisors approved a $64,807,108 budget for FY2014-15 at yesterday’s (May 28) morning work session. The budget calls for a one-cent reduction in real estate tax to 84 cents per $100 of assessed value. A couple of changes were noted by county administrator Rodney Hathaway prior to the budget being approved. Hathaway noted that a proposed fee on fireworks will remain the same for the upcoming year, and the Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) will be reduced by $175,000 after removal of the replacement of a tank at George Watkins Elementary School. DNA defendant receives sentence A Richmond woman whose DNA was found on a cigarette butt at the scene of a break-in will serve a year in a women’s Detention and Diversion program. Melissa Dawn Miffleton, 27, of the 2100 block of Oregon Avenue, received the formal sentence during May 19 proceedings in New Kent Circuit Court. Miffleton accepted a plea deal on April 13 to one count of burglary. Evidence presented indicated Miffleton broke into the house of Laurie Dunston with an unidentified male and stole items. Alleged burglary suspects caught in act at New Kent business
Two Virginia men, allegedly caught in the act of burglarizing a New Kent County business, are being held on two felony charges and one misdemeanor count in connection with the incident. Around midnight Monday and while on patrol inspecting businesses, Deputy Stewart Meredith spotted a suspicious vehicle parked on property owned by Commercial Carrier Corp., located off Route 33 (Eltham Road) just west of Eltham. Traffic stop leads to alleged assault on New Kent deputy sheriff
A West Point man faces an assortment of charges after he allegedly struggled with law enforcement officers during a traffic stop in New Kent County. Joseph Karl Fredericks, 48, of the 7900 block of Point Lookout Road, West Point, is charged with one count each of assaulting a law enforcement officer, obstruction of justice, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest following the May 22 incident. NKSO seeks information on Woodhaven Shores break-ins
New Kent Sheriff’s Office is looking for information on a number of thefts from unlocked cars in the Woodhaven Shores subdivision. On May 22, approximately 10 vehicles were entered into by an unidentified suspect. Also during the time of the break-ins, a suspicious fire was noted in the area. Surveillance photos reveal a person of interest, seen in the bottom right-hand corner of the above photo. Several VDOT road construction projects slated for upcoming week

New Kent Sheriff’s Office investigating burglary
New Kent Sheriff’s Office is requesting the public’s help in solving a daytime burglary that occurred on May 15 at a residence on Pine Fork Road in the county’s western end. Thieves gained entry by forcing open a bedroom window screen and breaking the window glass and lock. Items stolen included jewelry, a laptop computer, and cash. Two doors apparently sustained damage as the thieves left, a relative of the victim said, adding that investigators recovered some evidence at the scene.
