Charles City school board adopts $9.7 million budget for FY2014-15
Charles City’s school board adopted a $9.7 million budget for the FY2014-15 school year at its June 17 meeting. Representatives took action on the figure, voting 4-1 in favor of the budget. Casting the lone dissenting voice was at-large member Steve Fuhrmann, who disagreed with the amount of money allocated to instruction. “According to this budget and using the formula for the state report card, only 56.9 percent is designated for instruction,” he said. “I can’t approve of a budget when the state average is 65 percent.” However, outgoing superintendent of schools Janet Crawley said the state report card is…

New Kent Sheriff’s Office, school board forewarns of dangerous app
New Kent Sheriff’s Office and New Kent public schools are warning parents and guardians about a dangerous phone/tablet app that may reveal specific information about their child and location. Superintendent of schools Rick Richardson released a letter during the June 16 work session on the downloadable app “Streetchat.” The free app can be downloaded on any device, but there are serious risks. According to the letter, the app is very specific about the location and area where a child is in, even the school he/she attends. DMV Select to open June 23 in New Kent
Virginia’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will open a pilot DMV Select inside of New Kent County’s Administration Building on June 23. Working with the Commissioner of Revenue, the DMV select will allow customers to conduct vehicle-related transactions without having to leave the county. The pilot program will determine if a permanent facility is needed. “This partnership is designed for New Kent residents to get many DMV services closer to home,” said DMV Commissioner Richard Holcomb. “Utilizing New Kent’s DMV select will save customers trips to conduct their vehicle-related business.” Transactions that can be conducted by DMV Selects include vehicle…

Lanexa man arrested for alleged assualt, burglary
A Lanexa man is now in custody after allegedly causing a domestic disturbance at a Providence Forge restaurant. Charles Edward Laxton III, 33, of the 1000 block of West Riverside Drive, was arrested on June 9 after an incident at Patsy’s Diner. According to the arrest report, witnesses said Laxton allegedly entered the building without permission and assaulted an employee. When authorities arrived, he was not at the scene. Warrants were obtained for Laxton’s arrest. He is charged with one count each of burglary (in the daytime) and assault. He was taken into custody and was being held without bond.

William Royall Drumheller Jr. posted a grade-point average of 4.409 as valedictorian for New Kent High School’s Class of 2014. He is a member of SAC of Chesapeake Bay’s Governor School, SCA, and achieved national accolades at the junior academy of science. William will attend Randolph-Macon College and pursue his studies in the field of computer science. He is the son of William and Teresa Drumheller.
New Kent High School Class of 2014- Salutatorian Michael Venter
Michael Yang Venter is salutatorian of New Kent High School’s Class of 2014 with a grade-point average of 4.30. He is a member of scholastic bowl, forensic club, Blue Crab bowl club, and a member of the track and cross-country team. Michael plans to attend the University of Virginia to pursue a degree in computer science. He is the son of Wei and Leon Venter.
County attorney recommends NK revised prayer practice
Last month’s U.S. Supreme Court decision aimed at local governing bodies’ practice of opening public meetings with prayer is prompting New Kent’s county attorney to recommend that the county’s Board of Supervisors revamp its prayer practice. New Kent supervisors have a long held tradition of opening their public meetings with Christian prayer. Those prayers apparently fit within the court’s ruling that such prayers do not violate the First Amendment as long as there is neither aspersions cast on non-Christians nor attempts at religious conversion.
