New Kent High School Class of 2014- Valedictorian William Drumheller Jr.
William Royall Drumheller Jr. posted a grade-point average of 4.409 as valedictorian for New Kent High School’s Class of 2014. He is a member of SAC of Chesapeake Bay’s Governor School, SCA, and achieved national accolades at the junior academy of science. William will attend Randolph-Macon College and pursue his studies in the field of computer science. He is the son of William and Teresa Drumheller.
New Kent High School Class of 2014- Salutatorian Michael Venter
Michael Yang Venter is salutatorian of New Kent High School’s Class of 2014 with a grade-point average of 4.30. He is a member of scholastic bowl, forensic club, Blue Crab bowl club, and a member of the track and cross-country team. Michael plans to attend the University of Virginia to pursue a degree in computer science. He is the son of Wei and Leon Venter.
County attorney recommends NK revised prayer practice
Last month’s U.S. Supreme Court decision aimed at local governing bodies’ practice of opening public meetings with prayer is prompting New Kent’s county attorney to recommend that the county’s Board of Supervisors revamp its prayer practice. New Kent supervisors have a long held tradition of opening their public meetings with Christian prayer. Those prayers apparently fit within the court’s ruling that such prayers do not violate the First Amendment as long as there is neither aspersions cast on non-Christians nor attempts at religious conversion. Army dad returning from Afghanistan deployment surprises kids at New Kent Middle School
Thursday afternoon’s special assembly in the auditorium at New Kent Middle School had been billed as a celebration to showcase seventh graders’ outstanding performance on recent state Standards of Learning tests. Before television cameras and print media invited for the occasion, school principal Sammy Fudge praised the students, urging them to give themselves a round of applause. School resource officer Cpl. ‘Pearls of Wisdom’ bestowed upon CCHS graduates
Forty-four members of Charles City High School’s Class of 2014 received advice from outgoing superintendent of schools Dr. Janet Crawley during May 30 commencement ceremonies.
