Overnight paving slated for Route 60 in New Kent
Route 60 west (Pocahontas Trail) will have alternative lane closures from July 13-17. The road will be closed west at Foxhill Road (Rt. 657) from 7 p.m.-8 a.m. for overnight paving. Expect residual delays as a result of the lane closures.
Benjamin Harrison Bridge to have multiple closures until November
The Benjamin Harrison Bridge that connects Charles City and Prince George counties will be closed for four day periods beginning July 21 to November 2014 for bridge improvement projects. Crews will replace the 47-year old bridge’s auxiliary drive that raises and lowers the span, as well as make preventive maintenance repairs to the superstructure. Repairs will also address deck patching and beam replacement. Charles City Sheriff’s Office warns of credit card scam
Charles City Sheriff’s Office is warning citizens of a scam targeting credit card information. A citizen notified the sheriff’s office on a suspicious call received from a local number (804-829-xxxx). An automated machine asks if the victim would like to lower their credit card rate. If the option to lower the rate is accepted, the victim is transferred to a live operator who will ask for credit card information on the card that the victim wishes to lower their rate on. Reckless driving accident closes eastbound Interstate 64 for six hours
A Norfolk man operating a 2007 Freightliner box truck has been charged with reckless driving after a Tuesday morning accident caused Interstate 64 to shut down for six hours. James R. Frazier, 41, was taken into custody after an investigation stemmed from the morning accident. Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Steve Vick said Frazier operated the truck while traveling in the left lane on Interstate 64 eastbound as traffic began to slow down. Frazier allegedly looked down to get water when traffic came to a complete halt. The truck continued, striking a Toyota minivan and crashing into a Chevrolet Silverado….

Distributing cocaine nets Petersburg man six-year prison term
A Petersburg man who sold cocaine to a confidential informant will now serve six years in prison after accepting a plea deal in New Kent Circuit Court. Jeremiah Jerome Harrison, 28, of the 100 block of Marshall Street, entered guilty pleas to two counts of distribution of cocaine (second offense) during Monday morning court proceedings. Two additional distribution charges were dropped. In a summary of evidence, an informant who was attempting to get off of drugs notified authorities of a recent drug dealer in the area who tried to sell him the controlled substance. Eltham man arrested on domestic charges in New Kent
A Eltham man has been arrested on charges stemming from an alleged domestic dispute over the July 4 holiday weekend. Dennis Ray King, 53, of the 18000 block of Motel Drive, Room 111, has been charged with one count each of abduction and domestic assault. According to the police report, New Kent deputies responded to the Washington Burgess Motel in Eltham to address a domestic dispute between a wife and husband. Colonial Downs files dispute in Richmond Circuit Court
Virginia Racing Commission (VRC) mandated Colonial Downs and its representatives to negotiate a contract with Virginia’s Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association (VHBPA) for the 2015 season by a July 1 deadline. But Colonial Downs’ has decided to take the matters and place them into jurisdictional hands. Colonial Downs filed documents in Richmond Circuit Court on June 30 and will take the matter to be heard and decided through legal proceedings. Three indicted in Charles City Circuit Court
A Charles City man who confiscated a dump truck has been indicted in Charles City Circuit Court. Terrell Wesley Williams, 21, of the 4500 block of Barnetts Road, was indicted with one count each of grand larceny and destruction of property during July 1 proceedings. According to the indictment, on July 19, 2013, Williams allegedly stole the aforementioned vehicle belonging to Waste Management. When attempting to leave the property with the vehicle, he rammed into the fence, triggering the destruction on property charge. Williams was subsequently arrested and taken into custody. Joe Morrissey indicted in Henrico County Circuit Court
Joe Morrissey, who represents Henrico and Charles City County in Virginia’s House of Delegates, has been indicted in Henrico County Circuit Court on several charges relating to inappropriate conduct with a minor. A special grand jury convened on June 30, returning indictments on five counts of indecent liberties with a minor, and one count each of electronic solicitation of a minor, possession of child pornography, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and distribution of child pornography. Morrissey has represented Charles City since 2007 as its delegate.
Norfolk man arrested for alleged abduction in Talleysville
New Kent Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested a Norfolk man for allegedly assaulting and abducting a female victim. Xavier Tyler Slayton, 19, of the 900 block of Little Bay Avenue, Apt. 2, was charged with one count each of abduction, assault and battery, and misdemeanor disorderly conduct stemming from a June 26 incident. According to the police report, deputies arrived at the Pilot Gas Station in Talleysville to find Slayton detained by store employees. Witnesses said Slayton tried to forcibly remove the victim from the store and put her into a vehicle. Deputies later discovered that the defendant knew the victim….
