DNA defendant receives sentence A Richmond woman whose DNA was found on a cigarette butt at the scene of a break-in will serve a year in a women’s Detention and Diversion program. Melissa Dawn Miffleton, 27, of the 2100 block of Oregon Avenue, received the formal sentence during May 19 proceedings in New Kent Circuit Court. Miffleton accepted a plea deal on April 13 to one count of burglary. Evidence presented indicated Miffleton broke into the house of Laurie Dunston with an unidentified male and stole items. Alleged burglary suspects caught in act at New Kent business
Two Virginia men, allegedly caught in the act of burglarizing a New Kent County business, are being held on two felony charges and one misdemeanor count in connection with the incident. Around midnight Monday and while on patrol inspecting businesses, Deputy Stewart Meredith spotted a suspicious vehicle parked on property owned by Commercial Carrier Corp., located off Route 33 (Eltham Road) just west of Eltham. Traffic stop leads to alleged assault on New Kent deputy sheriff
A West Point man faces an assortment of charges after he allegedly struggled with law enforcement officers during a traffic stop in New Kent County. Joseph Karl Fredericks, 48, of the 7900 block of Point Lookout Road, West Point, is charged with one count each of assaulting a law enforcement officer, obstruction of justice, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest following the May 22 incident. New Kent deputies were conducting a vehicle checkpoint on Farmer’s Drive (Route 273) near Davis Pond Road. NKSO seeks information on Woodhaven Shores break-ins
New Kent Sheriff’s Office is looking for information on a number of thefts from unlocked cars in the Woodhaven Shores subdivision. On May 22, approximately 10 vehicles were entered into by an unidentified suspect. Also during the time of the break-ins, a suspicious fire was noted in the area. Surveillance photos reveal a person of interest, seen in the bottom right-hand corner of the above photo. Several VDOT road construction projects slated for upcoming week
VDOT crews will be continuing ongoing projects in New Kent and Charles City in the forthcoming week: –Interstate 64 East in New Kent between mile markers 217 and 224 will have the right lane closed from 10 p.m.-6 a.m., May 27-29 for pothole patching. –Interstate 64 East in New Kent between mile markers 216 and 220 will have the right lane closed from 6:30 a.m.-6 p.m., May 28-30 for pothole patching. –Courthouse Road (Rt. 155) between Old Forge Road and the Charles City County line will have alternating lane closures from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. to widen shoulders and to correct…

New Kent Sheriff’s Office investigating burglary
New Kent Sheriff’s Office is requesting the public’s help in solving a daytime burglary that occurred on May 15 at a residence on Pine Fork Road in the county’s western end. Thieves gained entry by forcing open a bedroom window screen and breaking the window glass and lock. Items stolen included jewelry, a laptop computer, and cash. Two doors apparently sustained damage as the thieves left, a relative of the victim said, adding that investigators recovered some evidence at the scene. No Colonial Downs/VHBPA agreement yet; VRC allows for three more days to settle dispute
An air of optimism hovered over Monday’s Virginia Racing Commission meeting. Perhaps this would be the day the contract dispute between Colonial Downs and the Virginia Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association would end, thus salvaging this summer’s thoroughbred racing season. Commission members recessed Monday’s meeting shortly before 10:30 a.m., citing how both sides seemed close and giving the warring parties until 1 p.m. to come to an agreement. Paving on Interstate 64 East to cause daytime delays
Extensive paving on Interstate 64 Eastbound will cause several delays and possible traffic back-ups next week. VDOT crews will patch potholes from mile marker 205 (Bottoms Bridge exit) to mile marker 224 starting on Sunday, May 18 and concluding Thursday, May 22, from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Crews will alternate lane closures during that time frame. Motorists are to be prepared for the delays and are advised to use an alternate route.
Supreme Court prayer ruling could impact NK commission
In the wake of last week’s U.S. Supreme Court decision, the door could be open for New Kent County’s Planning Commission to return to its practice of opening the group’s public meetings with a prayer. In a 5-4 decision on May 5, the majority of justices sided with the town council of Greece, N.Y., ruling that the body can open public meetings with a Christian prayer as long as that prayer does not cast aspersions on non-Christians or attempt religious conversion.
