NK schools decline option to outsource buses after study
At the request from New Kent’s Board of Supervisors, New Kent schools conducted a feasibility study on the possibility of outsourcing schools’ transportation department. And after a 15-minute presentation and a question and answer period that yielded more questions, school board members did not hesitate taking action. School board members voted 4-0 to reject outsourcing transportation during Tuesday night’s work session. District 5 representative Gail Hardinge was not in attedance. Juvenile in McDonald’s armed robbery found competent to stand trial
A Henrico County juvenile has been found competent to stand trial in relation to an armed robbery at the Bottoms Bridge McDonald’s. Robert James Priester, 16, of the 2200 block of Kingsbrook Drive, will have a bench trial (heard by the judge) on March 10. Priester is charged with three counts of armed robbery and one count of using a firearm to commit a robbery. A mental evaluation prepared by Dr. Elizabeth Wheeler for Chesterfield Circuit Court indicated the defendant understood the proceedings of the trial and has the capability of testifying if necessary. New Kent supervisors accept Historic School PPEA bid
New Kent supervisors unanimously approved acceptance of an unsolicited PPEA proposal from Marengo Management for the second phase of the Historic School project during last night’s (Feb. 19) special public hearing. County attorney Michele Gowdy recapped the second phase of the plan, consisting of replacing the east wall, renovating the kitchen, and the demolition and creation of complete plans to submit to the Department of Education for approval. Quinton woman, Toano man arrested on multiple charges
A Toano man and Quinton woman have been arrested and charged with several offenses that occurred on two separate dates in January. Christopher Ricardo Delaney, 28, of the 2000 block of Old Route 60, Toano, and Shauna Evelyn Chapman, 26, of the 10300 block of Racheal Diann Drive, Quinton, turned themselves in on Feb. 15 to Henrico Jail East. According to the report, Delaney and Chapman forged two stolen checks at Stewart’s Grocery in Lanexa on Jan. 15 and Jan. 22 of this year. Tennessee man accepts plea deal in New Kent Circuit Court
An out-of-state man accepted a plea agreement to one count of grand larceny during Feb. 10 New Kent Circuit Court proceedings. Jason Michael Allen, 33, of the 200 block of Hillcrest Drive, Johnson City, Tennessee, entered an Alford plea of guilty to confiscating jewelry last Aug. 26. According to Commonwealth’s Attorney Linwood Gregory, Allen received permission to fish on his grandfather’s property and to use the restroom inside the home. Evidence indicated the defendant stole jewelry belonging to his grandfather, William Madison, including unique items from overseas trips, when he entered the home to use the restroom. Under the plea…

Presentation on controversial Liberty Landing subdivision set for Tuesday’s New Kent Planning Commission meeting
A revised proposal for a controversial mixed-use subdivision in New Kent comes before the county’s Planning Commission during the group’s meeting next Tuesday (Feb. 18). Liberty Landing is proposed for 113 acres on the south side of Route 60 near Bottoms Bridge, across from the existing Five Lakes and Patriots Landing subdivisions. The developer, Virginia Beach-based Boyd Homes (Bridgewater Crossing Inc.), is proposing to build 450 housing units along with commercial space provided the county approves the company’s request to rezone the land from its current business status to R-3 multi-family residential. New Kent Academic Challenge team headed to state tournament
New Kent High School’s Academic Challenge team has qualified for the Group AA state tournament scheduled for Feb. 22 at the College of William & Mary. New Kent finished as runner-up to Manassas Park High School during the Feb. 6 Region 3A tournament held at Poquoson. New Kent will be defending its state title won a year ago. Last month, the team captured its fifth straight Bay Rivers District championship and followed that feat by winning the conference crown.
Several crashes in New Kent, Charles City; Sheriff’s Office advises to stay indoors
New Kent and Charles City saw their share of automobile accidents beginning Wednesday afternoon. According to Sgt. Thomas Molnar of the Virginia State Police, 545 accidents have been responded to in the Richmond Division area. Of those calls, approximately 255 were reported accidents and 124 for disabled vehicles. In New Kent, 23 crashes have been reported, with 22 of them occurring along Interstate 64. In Charles City, two crashes involving property damage have been reported. Input for Charles City superintendent sought
With the retirement of Janet Crawley as superintendent of schools as of June 30, Charles City’s School Board has entered into an agreement with the Virginia School Board Association (VSBA) to conduct a search for a division superintendent. As part of the process, the school board is actively seeking community input on the qualifications for a new superintendent.
