Military vet pleads guilty to domestic maiming charge
A military veteran indicted in connection with two separate attacks on his girlfriend inside the Providence Forge home they shared has pleaded guilty to one count of felony domestic maiming. A second maiming count lodged against Jeffrey David Ross, 32, of the 3000 block of Lower Mountain Road in Sanborn, N.Y., was dropped during a Dec. 6 trial in New Kent Circuit Court. Ross, however, pleaded guilty to a charge of misdemeanor violation of a protective order. Colonial Downs track burning set Colonial Downs has scheduled its annual burning of the Secretariat turf course for Friday, April 11, 4-8 p.m., with the event open to the public for the first time. Each year, the track’s Secretariat turf course is strategically set on fire to quickly remove dead “cover” and drive nutrients into the ground so grass returns greener and more lush in time for the upcoming summer racing season. New Kent farm VOF’s 700,000th easement
Virginia Outdoors Foundation (VOF) recently protected its 700,000th acre of open space thanks to a conservation easement donated on a 116-acre bicentennial farm in New Kent County. Silver Hall Farm has been owned and operated by the Binns family since 1771. The farm sits across from Crawford’s State Forest, which was acquired by VOF in 1995 before transferring to the Virginia Department of Forestry. Silver Hall Farm’s easement prohibits subdivisions and limits the amount of dwellings and other impervious surfaces that can be built on the farm. Deceptive behavior earns stern warning from judge in NK Circuit Court
A Dispuntanta woman will not receive any active time behind jail bars, but received a stern warning of her deceptive behavior from Judge Thomas B. Hoover during Dec. 9 New Kent Circuit Court proceedings. Katherine Delores Woodlief, 33, of the 10700 block of Pole Run Road, received a five-year suspended sentence. Woodlief accepted a plea deal last year and was placed in the first offender’s program in exchange for sentencing being suspended until the conclusion of the program. SCC foregoes Chickahominy-Skiffes Creek power line
Virginia’s State Corporation Commission (SCC) has elected to bypass an alternative route for a 500,000-volt power line through eastern Charles City for another path through Surry County. The decision came in a Nov. 26 press release through the SCC media and website. After reviewing an application from Dominion Virginia Power to find alternative routes for power lines to provide electricity to the Hampton Roads area, the SCC recommended the Surry County-Skiffes Creek option instead of the Chickahominy-Skiffes Creek option that would have run through Charles City. Father and son burglary duo learn fates in CC Circuit Court
A father and son duo who burglarized multiple houses learned their respective fates during Nov. 22 Charles City Circuit Court proceedings. David Scott Yates Sr., 45, and David Scott Yates Jr., 22, both formerly of the 4500 block of Rockinghorse Lane, accepted responsibility for crimes each committed earlier in the year. Yates Jr. accepted a plea deal at an earlier Oct. 18 trial where he admitted guilt to one count of grand larceny. CC tackles controversial stormwater management
A controversial mandate from the state’s Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) that has plagued New Kent is now making its way into Charles City. Charles City supervisors got their first look at the local stormwater management program at its quarterly work session last night (Wednesday). Needless to say, the hour-long presentation did not appeal to board members. The plan focuses on development of land and how much it would cost for land disturbance in accordance to the proposed mandated regulations. NFPA program attended by NK Fire-Rescue, social services
New Kent County Fire-Rescue and department of social services participated in a training conference on fire and fall prevention sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). The conference, entitled “Remembering WhenTM: A Fire and Fall Prevention Program for Older Adults”, was held December 1-3, in Boston, Mass. Teams were composed of one member of the fire department partnered with an individual from an agency within the community that serves older adults through home visits.
