Additional firefighters coming to NK
New Kent’s Board of Supervisors approved the transfer of funds to help New Kent Fire and Rescue (NKFR) acquire two additional firefighter positions. Funds in the amount of $83,872.32 were moved from part-time to full-time salaries in the department to help secure the positions. The new hires will provide full-time staffing at the Lanexa station from 7 a.m.-5 p.m. It will also allow for daily operations and equipment check-offs to ensure accountability. In the FY 2013-14 budget, NKFR received approval to hire two career firefighters. The new hires will bring the total of new employees to four for the year…

Route 5 bridge in Charles City to be inspected Sept. 23-27
The shoulders of the Route 5 bridge that connects James City and Charles City County will be closed September 23-27. VDOT will inspect the bridge from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. during the week to conduct the inspection. During this time, no access will be allowed on the shoulders of the bridge.
Paving on Eastbound I-64 scheduled for Sept. 16-19
VDOT has announced paving on the eastbound Interstate 64 lanes between mile markers 205 and 224 Sept. 16-19. The left lane will be closed from 9 p.m.-5 am. for paving on Sept. 16 & 17, while the right lane will be closed on Sept. 18 and 19. Delays are expected to occur during the overnight hours.
New Kent schools to explore possibility of Air Force ROTC
New Kent superintendent of schools Rick Richardson admitted after Monday night’s school board meeting that he wanted the school systems to have two things before his retirement. The first is the recently opened Bridging Communities Career and Technical Center (BCCTC). Now, his second one is not far off the horizon; an ROTC program. Plea agreement rejected by judge in felony eluding case
An attempt at a plea deal during New Kent Circuit Court Monday morning turned sour for one Richmond man. Joseph Junior Boyd, 44, of 1505 Tree Ridge Road, accepted a proposed deal to plead guilty to one count of felony eluding police, driving as a habitual offender, misdemeanor hit and run, and misdemeanor reckless driving, with a misdemeanor count of reckless driving and destruction of property dropped. Intoxicated driver agrees to prison sentence in plea deal
A Richmond man will now serve a little over three years in prison after a car accident injured his brother. Rodney Wayne Jones Sr., 56, 2816 Mouldlin Street, accepted a plea deal from Commonwealth’s Attorney Rob Tyler during Charles City Circuit Court proceedings on Sept. 3. Jones pled guilty to one felony count of DUI maiming, and misdemeanor counts of DUI (first offense), driving on a revoked license, and providing false information to a police officer. Charles City’s Home Depot Roxbury location held its “Giving Back and Building Strong Relationships “ program sponsored by Home Depot Interiors (HDI) manufacturing facility and Cypress/Hermitage Enterprises, that provides opportunities for intellectually challenged residents of Henrico, Charles City, and New Kent. HDI and Cypress recently invited some of the workers to tour the plant to see just how what they do helps. Father and son team indicted in Charles City Circuit Court
A father and son duo received formal indictments during Sept. 3 Charles City Circuit Court proceedings. David Yates Sr., 44, and David Yates Jr., 22, both of 4503 Rocking Horse Lane, Charles City, received multiple indictments from a Charles City grand jury. Both men were charged with one count of grand larceny, burglary, and misdemeanor destruction of property stemming from a Jan. 6 incident where police witnessed the duo breaking into the Dominion Power substation on Chambers Road. More money removed from schools by CC supervisors
Apparently a $20,000 message from Charles City’s Board of Supervisors wasn’t stern enough for the Charles City school system. Supervisors elected to remove $86,150 from the schools during its Sept. 4 work session. In total, more than $100,000 has been removed from the schools 2013-14 budget. New Kent Sheriff’s Office arrested John Alvin Brown, 44, of 8531 Old Elam Cemetery Road, Charles City, on one count of felony shoplifting (third of subsequent offense).
