Issue of racism addressed at New Kent Board of Supervisors, School Board meetings

Issues of racism looming from 2019 stemming from a note at New Kent High School made its way into both New Kent’s School Board and New Kent’s Board of Supervisors meeting Monday night. But the approach into 2020 is that knowledge and addressing the issue is needed to promote a safe and livable environment for all. Citizens spoke at New Kent’s School Board meeting referencing the late 2019 incident where an African-American student was handed a note with a racial slur on it. Suffolk man indicted, convicted of stealing items from Love’s Truck Stop in New Kent

A Suffolk man who stole items from a travel plaza in New Kent was indicted and convicted during Monday afternoon proceedings in New Kent Circuit Court. Michael Andrew Rosekrans, 37, of the 3800 block of Pughsville Road, admitted guilt to one count of grand larceny stemming from a Sept. 25, 2019 incident. In a summary of evidence provided by assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Randy Del Rossi, Rosekrans entered the Love’s Truck Stop on Emmaus Church Road and placed a backpack on the counter. Nine indicted by grand jury in New Kent Circuit Court

A grand jury certified indictments on nine individuals during Monday morning proceedings in New Kent Circuit Court: –Gilberto Antonio Irizarry Belbrut, 31, of the 2600 block of Granite Hill Circle, Richmond, on one count each of possession of a controlled substance and distribution of marijuana. The defendant allegedly committed the crimes on Mar. 7, 2019. –Kyle Robert Crews, 23, currently of Lunenburg Correctional Center, on a single charge of felony violation of a protective order (third offense). New Kent County Sheriff’s Office has announced an application to better assist citizens and provide transparency and communications of daily operations. The “New Kent County Sheriff’s App” is available on the App Store and in Google Play. It was developed by TheSheriffApp.com, a division of OCV, LLC. Among things the app will allow include submitting reported, find information and submit tips about crimes, receive push notifications, commend an employee, read the latest news, and view information on community services. Providence Forge man indicted on DUI maiming charge in Charles City

A man who fled the scene of an accident that left one person injured has been indicted by a Charles City grand jury. Terrell Jovon Johnson, 35, of the 8800 block of Samaria Lane, Providence Forge, was handed indictments on one count each of DUI maiming, felony fleeing the scene of an accident, misdemeanor DUI (second offense), and misdemeanor driving after forfeiting license. The indictments allege that on Oct. 17, 2019, Johnson crashed a vehicle while he was driving under the influence on Barnetts Road that left the passenger injured and attempted to flee from the vehicle. Petersburg man dies in Charles City crash on New Year’s Day

A Petersburg man is dead as the result of a crash on New Year’s Day in Charles City. Tramayne Lavarus Wyatt, 35, of the 2000 block of S. Crater Road, succumbed to his injuries and died at the scene of the accident. According to a report released by the Virginia State Police, at approximately 4:20 a.m. on Jan. 1, troopers responded to a single crash on John Tyler Memorial Highway (Route 5) just west of Kimages Road (Route 658). Charles City resolves to become a ‘Second Amendment sanctuary’

Charles City’s Board of Supervisors approved a resolution that declared the locality a “second amendment sanctuary.” The vote took place at Monday night’s regular board meeting in front of a capacity-filled room. The resolution is part of a movement that states that the county will back the United States Constitution’s right to bear arms and will oppose any restrictions that could be imposed by state legislature. A Charles City man who partook of a $112,000 robbery with two brothers from Dinwiddie entered a guilty plea during Friday morning proceedings in Charles City Circuit Court. Tyron Lorenza Allen, 33, of the 6200 block of Old Union Road, plead guilty to one count of robbery stemming from an Oct. 15, 2018 heist. Charles City High School graduation date moved to June 13

Charles City High School’s 2020 graduation date has been moved back one week. School board members unanimously approved to move the date from June 6 to June 13 due to a conflict with the VHSL Group 1A Track and Field Championship meet scheduled to be held that day. “With upwards of 20 seniors possibly participating in that meet, we didn’t want to take that opportunity from them,” superintendent of schools David Gaston commented. “We took this to the senior class and they unanimously supported the change to support their peers.” Parents were also notified about the potential change to the…

Gaston to retire as superintendent of Charles City schools at conclusion of academic year
