Powered by a sweep in the jumping events from senior Raven Harris, New Kent’s Lady Trojans indoor track and field team emerged as winners of the Group 3A Region A championship held Saturday at the Boo Williams Complex in Hampton. New Kent accumulated 122.5 points to win the meet. Bay Rivers District rivals Tabb (104.5) and York (80) finished in second and third, respectively. New Kent High School’s wrestling team repeats as Group 3A state champions

For the second consecutive year, New Kent High School’s wrestling team will bring home a state title. The Trojans outpointed state rival Christianburg 235.5-216.5 to earn the back-to-back recognition in the Group 3A State Championships held last Friday and Saturday at the Salem Civic Center. Matthew Eberly started the run of champions for the Trojans at the 106-pound division by earning a pinfall victory over Skyline’s Hunter Salmon in a mere 29 seconds. Johnson earns Tidewater District first team hoops honors

Charles City’s Kameron Johnson was selected as a member of the boys’ basketball all Tidewater District first team. Johnson, a junior, led the Panthers in scoring and eclipsed the 1,000-point barrier this season. Joining Johnson as members of the second team for the Tidewater District are seniors Leonardo DesJardins-Charity, Justis Crawley, and De’rome Chretien. All-Academic team selections went to Johnson, Christian Stewart, DaShaun Bailey, and Keondre Barnes. New Kent’s Trojans wrestling team had little trouble repeating as the Group 3A Region A champion for the third year in a row. The hosting Trojans accumulated 307.5 points, easily outdistancing themselves from Bay Rivers District rival York, who finished as runners-up of the event with 249.5 points. Down by as many as 13 points, the Lady Trojans rallied to upend the visiting Jamestown Lady Eagles 69-62 in the Bay Rivers District double overtime contest.
