Grafton muscles way to 55-37 victory over Lady Trojans

By Robb Johnson | February 7, 2020 4:08 pm

There are times when a record on paper doesn’t match a true team’s performance. For New Kent’s Lady Trojans, they more than likely wished Grafton’s Lady Clippers were one of those teams. Living up to its 16-1 record, Grafton used discipline defense and drained seven three-pointers en route to a 55-37 Bay Rivers District win over New Kent on Feb. 6. Early on, Grafton strung together a 9-2 run to kick off the contest. New Kent cut the lead down to four (11-7) after Madison Foley’s trifecta. But a response by Lady Clipper Nikki Gibson provided the visitors a 14-10…

Trojans struggles continue, drop latest contest to York

By Robb Johnson | February 7, 2020 2:24 pm

New Kent’s ability to put together a full 32 minutes together on the hardwood has plagued the Trojans for most of the 2019-2020 basketball season. A Feb. 5 matchup with the York Falcons replayed those troubles. After hanging with the visitors for one half, New Kent fell 58-37 in the Bay Rivers District contest. New Kent’s ploy in the contest was to use its size to bully the Falcons in the paint. But York failed to waver in those attempts, allowing the visitors to hold an 11-10 lead heading into the second quarter. New Kent’s offense sparked to kick off…

Panthers roll to Senior Night victory over West Point

By Robb Johnson | February 5, 2020 8:52 am

Describing Charles City’s year as a turnaround would be accurate. But when contributions are provided by every athlete on the roster, then results like Tuesday night happens. Charles City’s Panthers concluded their regular season play with an 83-58 victory over the visiting West Point Pointers to cap off a successful Senior Night that honored eight players. After trailing by four early on, Charles City finally got going as Kameron Johnson’s lay-in and corner three-pointer to give the Panthers their first lead of the night (8-6). After a three-pointer by West Point guard Khalil Norris, the hosts responded with a 9-0…

By Robb Johnson | February 5, 2020 8:10 am

For one half, Charles City’s Lady Panthers held tough with Region A’s third-ranked team in the West Point Lady Pointers. But a second half saw the visiting Lady Pointers use second chance opportunities to pull away from the hosts 44-25 on Senior Night for the Lady Panthers. Charles City’s Alexis Williams provided the hosts their only lead of the night with a game-opening lay-in. But West Point countered with a 10-2 run, with most of the points courtesy of Keyaira Braxton. Charles City was able to cut the lead to four (10-6) after Naveah Coney’s shot from the wing as…

Jumping out with an 8-0 run to kickoff the game, New Kent demolished the visiting West Point Lady Pointers 61-16 in the non-district affair. The hosts returned to its moniker of defensive pressure in the game, resulting in West Point committing early turnovers. From there, it was Lady Trojan Katelyn Norman whose offense powered the team. King William keeps undefeated record intact with triumph over Lady Panthers

By Robb Johnson | February 2, 2020 12:39 pm

Charles City’s Lady Panthers continue to work on their rebuild into a prominent program. With that rebuild comes bumps in the road. A Jan. 31 contest between the undefeated King William Lady Cavaliers was one such obstruction. King William jumped out early and cruised to a 69-24 over Charles City in the Tidewater District matchup. Charles City struggled on both ends of the court, as the Lady Cavaliers bolted to a 35-9 lead at the end of the first quarter behind a full-court press. In the second, Charles City’s Milla Mantell banked home a shot, followed by teammate Skye Bradby’s…
