A trip Friday night to Bailey Field in York County for the New Kent Trojans was expected to be the start of a playoff run. Instead, the flame of a fire that once gleamed bright dimmed the chances of the visiting Trojans. After overcoming turnovers and performing well in the second half, New Kent couldn’t snatch victory from the hosting Tabb Tigers, falling 28-26 in the Bay Rivers District contest. With a winless Southampton Lady Indians team in town and a final season home appearance for the New Kent Lady Trojans, the Oct. 24 Senior Night celebration concluded in a joyous occasion for the home team. New Kent cruised to a 9-0 mercy rule win during the contest, upping the Lady Trojans record to 8-8 on the season. In an effort to make another appearance in the Group 3A playoffs, New Kent’s Trojans would essentially have to run the gauntlet of opponents and pull out wins over the next four weeks. After coming into the season on a winning streak, New Kent’s Lady Trojans field hockey team wavered on an even 6-6 record as they hosted a Jamestown Lady Eagles team that had dropped only two contests on the year.
