Postseason volleyball affairs between Bay Rivers District rivals New Kent and Tabb have been a staple for the last two years, with each team splitting wins in the previous encounters. In a Monday night battle with a spot to the Group 3A state tournament on the line, it would be the experienced Lady Tigers of Tabb who would bring New Kent’s season to an end. Needing a win over Smithfield’s Packers and additional help in other contest, New Kent’s Trojans handled their side of the Friday night football contest. The Trojans held Smithfield to only one first down, shutting out the Packers 28-0 in the Bay Rivers District finale on the road. After taking a 3-0 lead on a field goal, New Kent signal-caller Nathan Thornton connected with receiver Adam Cable on a 12-yard screen to help up the advantage 10-0. Johnson wins Group 3A Region A cross-country title

New Kent’s Patrick Johnson emerged as the winner at the the Group 3A Region A Boys’ Cross-Country Championships held Nov. 6 at Bells Mill Park in Chesapeake. Johnson accumulated a time of 16:32.05, beating Nate Jennings of Colonial Heights by more than three seconds. Other scorers for the Trojans were Colin Pierce (25th-19:06.78), Parker Hines (33rd-19:54.25), Daniel Meyer (34th-19:56.64), and Jack Porter (37th-20:07.49). Curry qualifies for AAU cross-country championship

Jayden Curry, a New Kent resident, has qualified for the AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) National Cross-Country Championship meet in December in Knoxville, Tennessee. Curry ran a tie of 15:45 in the boys’ 13U age division at the state meet in Portsmouth, winning the event. This is the second consecutive year he has qualified for the event.

Norcom no match for Lady Trojans in first round of regional tournament

With the regular season behind them, New Kent’s Lady Trojans geared up Monday night for their Group 3A Region A opening round volleyball contest against the visiting I.C. Norcom Lady Greyhounds. The match proved to be a positive stepping stone for the hosts. New Kent dominated 25-10, 25-6, 25-8 in the contest, setting the Lady Trojans up for a trip to Southampton to take on the Lady Indians. Up by four with 9:38 remaining in the second quarter, Charles City’s Panthers felt like they were in firm control of Friday night’s contest against the visiting Mathews Blue Devils. But when senior leader Ha’Ji Jackson exited the contest, a snowball effect of a downward trend followed the hosts.
