A pair of New Kent siblings earned recognition at the AAU Track and Field National Indoor Track and Field Championships. Jayden Curry cleared a height of 4’8” in the high jump, becoming a national champion in the event for the 13 and under age group. His sister, Lauren Curry, jumped 12’6” in the 11 and under girls’ long jump competition, finishing tenth. The competition was held in Landover, Maryland, over a three-day period and consisted of more than 2,500 competitors.
Allison De Luca has been announced as the new racing secretary for Colonial Downs in New Kent. De Luca’s primary duties will be assisting with Colonial Downs’ transition back into live horse racing. Live thoroughbred racing is scheduled to return on Aug. 8, with the facility itself opening up in April.
Julianna Jones, a 2017 graduate of New Kent High School, recently helped James Madison University’s swimming team win the Colonial Athletic Association’s Swimming and Diving championship. Jones earned a first-place finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle and earned a second-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle. Among other accomplishments include Jones breaking three school records in the 500-yard, 1000-yard, and 1,650-yard freestyle.
Billy Casper Golf has been selected to operate Brickshire Golf Club in Providence Forge. The organization and innovative manager supervises 150 courses, country clubs, and resorts in 29 states. Billy Casper Golf will facilitate clubhouse operations, golf course maintenance, marketing and sales, staffing and training, merchandising, golf instruction, and financial management.
New Kent High School’s wrestling team has claimed the ultimate prize and won the Group 3A State Championship. New Kent’s Trojans accumulated 200.5 points, upending 19-time winner Christiansburg High School, snapping their 17-year consecutive state title win streak. Christiansburg settled for runner-up with 190 points while Brentsville District finished in third with 122.5. The Trojans monumental performance on the mat spawned several state champions. In the 113-pound division, Evan Holloway won a 4-2 decision of Christiansburg’s Luke Robie. In a season filled with missed opportunities, New Kent Trojans looked to salvage Senior Night in the Feb. 7 matchup against Warhill. Unfortunately for the hosts, not taking advantage of their talent on the floor mirrored the season long woes for the Trojans. Warhill’s Lions defeated New Kent 63-56, spoiling Senior Night and sweeping the season series with the Trojans.
