By Andre Jones | February 5, 2019 10:06 pm

Usually on Senior Night, it’s the opportunity for the graduating class to shine in front of the home crowd. But for Charles City’s Panthers, the seniors allowed a junior sharpshooter to lead the way. Christian Stewart’s 22 points, that included five three-pointers, sparked the homestanding Panthers to a 69-39 victory over the visiting West Point Pointers in Tuesday night’s home finale. The hosts found themselves in an early deficit, as West Point’s Aaron Simmons drained back-to-back corner threes to jumpstart the visitors in the game. But the Panthers delivered their first haymaker of an offensive flurry, scoring 14 consecutive points…

By Robb Johnson | February 2, 2019 10:04 am

New Kent’s encounter with the highly-touted Smithfield Packers Friday night unfortunately ended the same way as the first match-up in Smithfield did; with a loss. Using a barrage of three-point shooting, the visiting Packers cruised to a 77-50 rout of the hosting Trojans in the Bay Rivers’ clash. New Kent showed improvement from their earlier match with the Packers, playing competitive enough to remain eight points down (19-11) to the Bay Rivers favorite after the first quarter. However, their issues covering Smithfield sharpshooter Joshua Farmer became an issue. Farmer connected with two of his team’s four trifectas at the start…

The Jan. 31 matchup against Lafayette’s Lady Rams did the hosts no favors. Lady Panthers survive comeback scare to win third game of season

By Andre Jones | January 26, 2019 11:01 pm

When two rebuilding programs face each other on the hardwood, they rarely encounter situations that places them in unfamiliar territory. For Charles City’s Lady Panthers, junior guard Nijah Johnson’s only point of the night came at the right moment. Johnson’s free throw at the front end of the bonus situation helped the Lady Panthers stave off Colonial Beach’s Lady Drifters 38-34 in Saturday night’s contest. Both teams struggled early on, with the free throw line becoming the main adversary for each one. With Charles City’s three for 10 and Colonial Beach’s six for 18 in the first half, neither team…

Grafton’s press frustrates Lady Trojans in Bay Rivers contest

By Robb Johnson | January 26, 2019 1:06 am

New Kent’s Lady Trojans searched for a win to boost their record in the standards in a last effort push to make the playoffs. However, an offensive rebound barrage provided second chance opportunities that the visiting Lady Islanders from Poquoson did not squander. The inability to remain mentally focused factored in New Kent’s 46-31 defeat in Friday night basketball action. Grafton’s press overwhelmed the host early on, leading to traps in the backcourt and reckless turnovers. And when the Lady Trojans were not turning the ball over, boxing out members of Grafton’s team became a chore. Lady Clipper Nikki Gibson…
